Forum crashed and they have been working on it, it seems they werent able to recover all the info tho.
What happened is that the database crashed, and we lost some posting history. A database repair has been run and it has restored the forum up until 2011-07-17, so we've lost a few days. The reason for this is because the forum's database is growing too fast. I'm thinking about what to do about this, perhaps disable attachments for now or decrease private messages count or something like that. We'll see.
Oh and, Apache has been upgraded to latest stable version (2.2.19).

Would disabling walls and PMs help? I've noticed there are people here who don't (or rarely) post in threads but mostly troll people's walls and PMs.

Yes, PMs seem to be unlimited. As for attachments i think people only use them because they can't post pictures in another way.

:( this is so sad.....lol okay maybe I'm being melodramatic but man pity that happened.
PM's really aren't such a big deal from my experience, Elias. On my vB3.8 forum, people use the PM system like it's water in the desert and the PM section is still only about 20 megabytes according to phpMyAdmin.
PostEditHistory, posts themselves, custom avatars, attachments, control panel session history, that's generally where the problem areas are. :p
But, as far as PM's go, you can disable saving a copy in your sent folder by default and allow people to manually check it off. I know I for one prefer not to save outbound PM's.

Many thanks to the administrators of ABF for their work:)

I think disabling attachments would be very sad because attachments are very
important(photos-how to classify somebody without any photo...) and disabling of them decreaseses the value and omneity of the forum.
But if we need to restrict something- what about private (and vistitor) messages?I mean i think it is a reasonable idea: people have e-mails, facebooks, myspaces and other channels to communicate privately with other members. Why not to restrict the number of pm-s/ vm-s.
My proposal: let's try to preserve forum, if it is necessary for forum, let's restrict/disable messages.Non-public posts aren't so essentially necessary for a forum, don't other members think so?
Yeah, you can't really have it both ways. He doesn't want us posting linked images for bandwidth purposes, so people are supposed upload attachments, which increases the size of the database... which is bad.
You surely can't ban images entirely and only have people hyperlinking. That'd be dreadful.
I'd ban attachments but allow img code.

Damn it. :)There went my updated avatar, plus 40 informative posts. Not forgetting the names of the last 10 users who kindly visited my profile page.
Regards (let's hope the database doesn't choke to death again...)

For those of you who lost a thread, just search after the cached version of it on Google and repost it.
This is a good opportunity to remind ourselves that Elias is supporting this site from his own wallet. There will be obvious financial limitations as this place continues to expand and outgrow its' servers.
Perhaps now's the time to carry out a donation drive. I for one would be happy to impart $5 if it keeps this place running and problem-free.
I'm sure others would be happy to do the same for entertainment/educational purposes. ;)

Yea, we already suggested that, we were waiting for him to sort out the donation details. I guess he was busy.

He can use paypal for donations...cause this can't keep happening. A lot of good material will be lost if it does.
I cant find a reference i cited in one of my posts about neanderthals and a mexican newspapers report on them. I got it from another poster earlier in the thread. Does someone have THAT post or remember it.

[Here (http://www.forumbiodiversity.com/showthread.php?p=433044#post433044)], I link to two duplicate threads that got no replies that can be deleted. If you feel like it you can delete 'em. They were due to that probationary period where I did not know they could go through.

Sadly such events are damaging to a community. It'll heal though.
