While we are politically a part of Spain, we are geographically situated in Africa, off the coast of Morocco to be exact. Thus, we are as much North Africans as we are Spanish. Our geographic location and history has made our culture unique in that we are essentially a crossroad to Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Our original inhabitants were Berbers (Amazigh) known collectively as Guanches. They were a primitive "stone-age" people at the time of the Spanish conquest, and sadly were overwhelmed by European colonisation. Many were killed, sold into slavery, faced forced assimilation, and in some cases relocated to mainland Spain or to the American colonies. European slavers would also raid the North African coast and their muslim captives whom we call "moriscos" (the meaning is different from the Moriscos of Spain) were brought to the eastern islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. Much like the Guanches before them they faced forced assimilation and conversion. This North African element along with that of the waves of colonists from Spain and Portugal that settled throughout the islands formed the basis of our Canarian culture. A hybrid culture that links us forever to both Europe and North Africa. I therefore submit to you several pictures of Canarian people.

My Canarian great grandmother, who family were from a town call Hermigua. Some of the branches in her family tree have been traced back to the 1630's.

The Guanches had villages , kings , priests and all , not all of them were stone-aged living in caves like the Spaniards liked to pretend. In North Africa , there still are some isolated Berbers living as troglodytes (http://lm-rentacar.com/img/tataouine-ksar.jpg), they make houses in caves.

I agree with you. The Guanches had a high degree of civilisation, however, by "stone-age" I meant that they did not have the metallurgy with which to fashion metal weaponry, tools, and other devices.
