View Full Version : Men with Long Hair

It is more common for a guy to have shorter hair than women. Having short hair was a sign of modern masculinity (like how military men have buzz cut while most corporate bosses would have a clean short haircut). The sign of femininity is having long flowing hair. However, we see a trend where women like actresses, have short cropped cuts and many actors and male models have long hair.

If you are a guy, do you think having long hair would make you less masculine?
And if you're a girl, do you think a guy with long hair could be attractive?

I had long hair for quite some time that went down to my shoulders, I only got it cut like last month, I feel no different though, I don't really think it changed anything. As for feeling less masculine with long hair, not at all, feels exactly the same as now really.

I think long hair can be in fact more masculine on a man than short hair. It's kind of like a majestic mane on a male lion. Think of conan the barbarian and wrestlers and etc etc. Obviously some long haired guys look like fruits, but on a masculine badass dude it makes them look even more masculine and badass IMO.

Ultimately a masculine badass dude will seem masculine and badass no matter what, and vice versa.

Your example doesn't aid your argument, perhaps the least masculine male I've ever seen, but I agree with you.

I find long hair attractive. I think it looks very nice and sophisticated in a pony tail personally. I prefer longer than the men pictured above though. But Brad Pitt has nice hair there too.
http://cs413226.vk.me/v413226542/395/mseFlgusoUI.jpg I love stuff like that though haha

I think it can look bad on teenagers though. I think it depends on the person, because it can often times look silly or "improper." But in my personal taste, I love pony tails. They look nice. :p
I don't think it looks less masculine. It doesn't make him look like a girl. Especially since men don't style their hair or cut it in layers or part it from anywhere but the center so you can tell it's a man's hair. I've actually confused big built women for long haired men if their hair is just grown naturally. (well my hair is plain too but..)

I really can't grow my hair without it turning awkward. This is because I have strong straight hair that grows forward. I'm neither a fan of 80s mullets nor emo style.

I think the hair from the 1700s was really nice. I like it more than the "viking hair" thing.

I have a long hair, some women find me insatiably attractive. I don't think long hair devalues masculinity, and those that think it does are imbeciles. There is nothing inherently masculine about shorter hair styles, it's only an illusion of masculinity because everyone is abiding by the normative standard of hair style for men, which is short hair. Masculinity is a character trait, you either have it or you don't. It doesn't matter what hair style you have.

I've never been less attracted to a woman because she had shorter hair.

Case in point, Stefania Ferrario, she has short hair but she's very aesthetically appealing to me.

The more beautiful and feminine the woman the more able she is to pull off having short hair in my experience. Perhaps the opposite is true for men and long hair? The more badass and masculine, the more masculine and good they will look with long hair?

But men with long hair I think is beautiful!!! Guys should try it at least once and it will change your life. LOL!

That's kind of my point, most can't pull it off (like you said look like a dyke or like they're sick or just plain weird and ugly), but really really beautiful girls can.
I sometimes do a test in my mind imagining a woman with short hair to test how beautiful she is.

Like put Jennifer Aniston to the test-

Our culture leads people to believe that hair style is a matter of personal preference, that hair style is a matter of fashion and/or convenience, and that how people wear their hair is simply a cosmetic issue. Yet it may be time for us to consider that many of our most basic assumptions about reality are in error.

The mammalian body has evolved over millions of years. Each part of the body has highly sensitive work to perform for the survival and well being of the body as a whole. The body has a reason for every part of itself. Hair is an extension of the nervous system, it can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly evolved 'feelers' or 'antennae' that transmit vast amounts of important information to the brain stem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.

Not only does hair in people, including facial hair in men, provide an information highway reaching the brain, hair also emits energy, the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain into the outer environment. This has been seen in Kirlian photography when a person is photographed with long hair and then rephotographed after the hair is cut. When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in numbing out. Cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It is also a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds, and contributes to sexual frustration.

I'm not opposed to long hair on guys but it takes a certain kind of guy to pull it off. Some men, like my husband, would look silly/unkempt with long hair.

Just like any style, it needs the character of the person to match in order to work.

For thousands of years, it was a sign of masculinity to have long hair. Heard of the story of Samson from the Bible? His power derived from his hair, and when it got cut he lost his power. There was a belief in several cultures that hair = power. Male warriors were those most likely to wear long hair, and they took great pride in their hair and groomed it. Combs were essential in many cultures and in some cultures the men would braid their long hair.

Personally, I don't like long hair on myself but not because of BS modern ideas of masculinity, but because I find it irritating to have hair below my ears, and it becomes cumbersome to deal with. Short hair just seems more practical and easy to deal with.

Has nothing to do with Christianity as you have proven above. It was just a social norm probably due to cleanliness more than anything. Men were mostly labors in the fields while women were mostly in home so long hair was more accepted for women. Hevneren likes to blame Christianity for everything bad in Western society. I've learned he's not worth arguing. I'm sure he'll have the typical long drawn out slanderous bullshit response.

You don't like me personally, so therefore my argument is factually wrong? I thought it was a rather well known fact that with the coming of Christianity, there were new trends emerging. Piousness and modesty were valued more than pride and military prowess, and monks would reflect that in the way their hair was cut.

Also, there was the concept of the barbarian. The word "barbarian" literally means someone who was hairy, meaning long hair and beard. Hence the word "barber". So called barbarians were pagan, so it makes sense that Chrisyians wanted to distance themselves from those hairy barbarians in whatever way they could.

Slander? It's slander to not agree with you on a topic? When have I slandered you? Do you even know what the word "slander" means?

This is true, however, I don't think having long hair is a symbol of pride and military prowess, as Jesus is represented in most Christian sects as having long hair and a big beard and he preached of peace and non-violence.

I believe the idea of shorter hair equaling something better came later on, probably in Medieval times due to rapidly changing trends and ideas. (or probably even earlier with the Romans, but that was mostly because Rome was based around conquest and any male could be called upon for duty at any second later on in the history of the Romans) It could also be an on and off thing, just look at the 80's in the US, males having long hair was very popular, now it's mostly neutral but there seems to be a strong leaning towards short hair. Wouldn't surprise me if it changed again in another 20 years.

I think the current short hair thing came much later than medieval times, more like around the industrial revolution in the 1800s. There was however another short hair trend in ancient rome and greece. But medieval, from dark ages through the renaissance, long hair was considered pretty balla, and for northern and western barbarians long before that.

It is a myth and misconception that Jesus had long hair. Nobody really knows because the Bible does say that although he had a beard, it never refers to his hair as being long. That comes from the fertile imaginations of artsy types.

The Bible also says that if a man have long hair, it is a shame to him and that he shouldn't pray or prophesy with that long hair. However, it never defines what long is. During the 1600s, the Cavaliers (drinking, gaming and whoring types) in England wore their hair down their backs whilst the Puritans only wore it to their shoulders. These pious individuals considered their hair short. However, many folks today would consider the Puritan's hairstyle quite long.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was considering it contains many pointless requirements like in Exodus god didn't want the Israelites to eat bread containing yeast, but I find strange that a god would focus on something as miniscule and absurd as hair length.

I find it odd that people still consider religious rules as odd. I honestly think people in the past never made such a big deal out of old testament peculiarities as they do now. Too much pointless scrutiny rather than rules. I mean common, like people were oblivious to this for thousands of years of antiquity?

The bible (particularly the old testament) has been criticized again and again since it first came out, starting with the Romans and eventually expanding out to other countries with numerous philosophers taking it apart, book by book and pointing out what they find wrong with it, it's nothing new, and I actually think it was a bigger deal back then than it is now. To me the only sensible story in the old testament is the book of Job, being the only one that doesn't bring up fanciful bullshit and the first book to actually bring legitimate arguments against God and the ridiculousness of previous books in the old testament.

I like my man-mane. I also feel as if it's a natural look. In the modern day there's a bit of stigma attached to long hair and being a man. Some people think you're a hippy, some think you're a hard-rocker, some think you're trying to be like Fabio, or not looking to get a job or promotion anytime soon.

Since I used to sport the bald boxer type hair before, I can tell a difference in how people treat me depending on my hair long or short. If I'm bald shaven, I tend to look harder and people approach me more carefully than now when I'm doing the nordic-Jesus look.

I have never had long hair. The closest was when I was very little in the 80's, but it was the 80's, and once later, when I was 13. It was still not long. Even though I am a hardrocker and metal-fan I would never try to grow long hair. I don't think it would turn out well. Because my hair is thick and starts to get slightly curly when it gets some length. I had hair over my ears and down my neck a while when I was 13 and it was curled and wavy, I looked like a mini-professor (except that I had no glasses). I guess if I tried to get long hair like Conan or many metal musicians I could get it the right look eventually, but the road to that would be sprown, curly and annoying. For this reason I do not use gel either, except when it is very short to get it a fork-like action-look. Just longer than that and the gel wouldn't handle the curls. I don't think I could get a Japanese visual-key/porcupine-homo hair cut (and I am certainly not sad over that).

However thanks to my chisseled and hexagonic face I fit splendid with stubb or military-crewcut style.

I had long hair in childhood and then between the age of 15 until 22 or something, shaved them to 3mm. Now I think I will grow them long again. I feel much better when I have long hair for whatever reason and I do not expect it would influence my career in any way. I have curly hair (nothing too drastic) and you could have seen it in my old profile pic. Now there is my son's pic there but he looks almost identical to myself being his age (just he is a bit more child-blond).

I keep my hair short most of the time, I like it better that way. I've let my hair grow for a few months then I would cave and end up cutting it again. I have soft wavy/curly hair. I would probably look like those guy with long hair in the pictures in the first post, if I straightened my hair. I have straightened my hair before and it came out that way. I don't think long or short hair would affect my level of masculinity. I don't think a guy with long head hair and/or facial hair is looking to enjoy good sexual action. It looks and feels very ascetic. There are nerves on your skin and scalp that are not getting stimulated due to the lack of real flesh on flesh contact. Again, these things are subjective because a person can train their mind to finding absolutely anything as an attractive plus point, so maybe some girls get stimulated by that look about a man, and likewise some men like feeling the hairy werewolf alpha male self-image as a turn-on for themselves in the bedroom (self-image is a big deal when it comes to sexuality).
I say this as someone that kept hair down to my chest, and in short fades now. There is a difference. I also attracted different types of girls with the different hair lengths.

Yes, straight hair is the exception to my preference, it looks girly IMO. Wavy shoulder length hair brings out the most out of your face frame, looking voluminous and manly nonetheless as it is a natural style for many cultures in history.

I wouldn't want my hair that long, and I don't like that those guys have a part in their hair. If I did my grow my hair out, I would want it above shoulder length and shaggy with some bangs. The style that I would want to go for would be the skater/surfer look. I think it would nice with my dark hair. It wouldn't stay stick straight for long, if I laid down and moved around a bit, my hair would start to get more wavy and the ends/tips would start to curl a little.

That said, I couldn't be with a man whose hair was longer than my own. Insecurity? Nah. Just seems odd is all.

Definitely agree with this, I like long hair on women, but like it a lot better when it's a little longer than average (like a couple inches above their waist) there's just something about it that I like a lot, probably just a primitive instinct I have left over.

My wife has really short hair and I have long hair, I think it's a cool rock-star like combo.
I can't say I like short or long hair on women, depends on the woman. Hair is just hair. I've seen hot bald chicks, like Lupita N'yongo.

I think straight hair looks dumb to be honest, I have wavey hair and that's why I'm so determined to grow a big volumous badass mane. If I had lifeless straight hair I wouldn't bother. Guys with really long straight hair always look like dorks to me.

Well...it depends. There are some ethnicities with naturally straight hair, like Asians or Native Americans.

But for some white men with long straight hair...yeah, it may look a bit feminine.

Or a bit creepy...

Depends on many things; body constitution, facial features, mannerisms and so on. I'm also convinced how the hair is kept could be also play a role on what others could perceive as masculine or feminine. Extremely well kept hair is often associated with women self-care habits.

I have long hair, down to my shoulders currently and still growing. This is my second time growing it because as soon as I cut it off it only took 5 months for me to realise it has to grow back again,I just didn't feel right. My way of doing my hair doesn't really make me feel like a girl or anything as have the facial hair to match. Not all men can pull off the long hair and I think it also depends on the type of hair as well, I don't think that something like too curly works well unless your growing an afro. If you take time to analyse what kind of men in the media are depicted with long hair the first kind of people that pops up in my mind is WWE wrestlers, seems like the norm to have a chiseled body and long hair down there, and its also huge with the tv show characters like my boy khal drogo from GOT.

Nah, I'm not into men with long hair at all.
It has to be styleable and let's me real, there's not a lot that u can do with long hair.

Also I have really long hair so... It would be like competition lol.

As far as I am concerned it needs to be shortish and trendy :)
