Hello

I thought I would post my results as that seems to be quite popular here.
Then maybe you can help me solve a little bit of a mystery.
I did quite a bit of research into my family history before signing up to 23andme. My direct male line is from Cornwall via my great great grandfather, and my direct female line is also from Cornwall thanks to my great great grandmother. Almost everyone else in between is from Yorkshire, with a handful from nearby Derbyshire and County Durham.
I have only found one person not born in England, and he was Irish.

This leaves me a little confused regarding my Dodecad results. As you will see, I am somewhat different from the average British/English person and I just don't understand why. On some tests I come out as being pretty close to Orkadian, and on others I match "Mixed Germanic" quite closely. Being from Yorkshire, I expected to be perhaps a little bit closer to Scandinavia, but I also have a much larger South Western component than your average Englishman. This doesn't seem to be explained by the Cornish influence either.
Genetic ties:

So far ive found German ties via my maternal aunt, which is linked to the Hansa league in all likelihood, this i see in a number of ways, i found lots of German cousins at RF and also at default AF levels i see Germany as her second highest % at 0,5%.

Ive also found Tatar ties to Russia via my maternal side using RF, i see it both in my uncle and grandmother, but strongest in my uncle, this i think is because both my maternal grandfather and grandmother came from approximately the same place and so they were likely related distantly at least and so any Tatar ancestry that came into this gene-pool would have spread like wildfire..so far with Davids help over at eurogenes we have tracked the linage (to quote him):

Quote:

It looks like you have an Uzbek match there, and so does your uncle.

In fact, both of you have quite a few Turkic hits in that region compared to other Euros (Uzbek, Turkmen, Chuvash, etc.), and you both pull towards the Altai region based on a PCA of the data. So it looks like this: Eastern China > Hexi Xorridor > Uzbekistan > Volga region > Norway

Via my paternal side i found strong ties to Iceland and the Faeroe isles and from there onto the UK, these i guess are from the middle ages when Norway was at its peak in terms of colonial settling and trading with Europe, so around 12-1300's.

ok thats enough for now...

Without getting too technical, the new test analyzes your autosomal DNA, which includes the entire genome—all 23 pairs of chromosomes—as opposed to only looking at the Y-chromosome or Mitochondrial DNA (which makes other types of tests gender specific or otherwise limited).

Also, the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests look at much smaller amounts of your DNA. For example, YDNA tests only look at about 40 locations whereas AncestryDNA comprehensively looks at the entire genome at over 700,000 locations, all with a simple saliva sample. 40 vs. 700,000? You don’t need to be a scientist to see that this is a huge improvement.

From the screen caps the test seems to be able to break down one's ancestry into groups like "British", "Scandinavian", "Middle Eastern", etc. a bit more specific than what is provided at 23andMe at first glance.

The opening price listed is $99 for ancestry.com subscribers.

Debating whether or not to bother with this test, I have a compulsion to test with as many platforms as I can as to find a "Golden Mean" so to say.

I've spent three sleepless nights trying to extract the SNP data from BAM alignments of Swedish neolithic samples & run it with EIGENSTRAT smartpca.
And i am pleased to say that i've finally managed to crack these hardcore (since there wasn't a straightforward conversion between formats, it took some time to call reliable SNPs from the pileup files). Because of exaustion and fatigue felt after the restless night, i wouldn't comment on the PCA plot attched below (i hope that plot content is self-explanatory). Instead i'll be happy to hear some explanations regarding the positions of neolithic farmer (Gok4), hunter-gatherers (Ajv52, Ajv70) and Ötzi on this map

I am curious if anyone has heard anything about a refinement of FTDNA's Population Finder? After doing some more research since I initially tested I am finding my result to be less than par when I compare to other projects and my paper genealogy.

I recently sent this message over to FTDNA:

Quote:

Greetings, I am curious if the current Population Finder results are going to be refined eventually?

I ask because my current result does not match well with my genealogy (roughly 75% being from the British Isle's, remaining 24.21875% from Western Germany, 0.78125% from Portugal).

I also tested with 23andMe Complete edition and sent my raw data from both Population Finder and 23andMe to Dr. McDonald and the Eurogenes Project (I being US83), and I tested with McDonald as French= 0.330, English= 0.670 (a much closer result as someone who is for the most part a British and Western German split)with my overall clustering being with peoples from Kent and Cornwall (would presume that my Western German ancestry is pulling me Southwards in England on the maps).

With the Eurogenes Project I obtained a similar result (also clustering overall with the peoples from Cornwall and Kent).

My current result with PF is:

Europe (Western European):
French, Orcadian, Spanish
86.80% ±9.72%

Europe: Tuscan, Finnish, Romanian, Russian, Sardinian:
13.20% ±9.72%

I know for fact that I have no recent Russian, Tuscan, Finnish, Romanian or Sardinian ancestry, so I am curious as to how that came to be in the match? If I were to apply the margin of error in favor of the West European matches (French, Orcadian, Spanish) I could see a more believable result of 96.53% W. Euro (French, Orcadian, Spanish). Would it be more wise, when discussing my results with others, to do as such with the margin of error?
New price will be $299.

Anne Wojcicki, of 23andMe: "23andMe does not have any immediate plans to introduce new premium fee-based features, but we expect to do so in the future."

I just got my initial results from 23andMe. My maternal haplogroup is F1a and my paternal haplogroup is E1b1b1a. I am Filipino so the E1b1b1a is surprising, anybody know why my maternal haplogroup would be this? They are still calculating my ancestry painting who this is all I know so far. This is all very exciting to me and I can't wait to get my ancestry painting.
