Over a year ago I ordered genetic testing through FTDNA to find out the ancestry of my paternal side (as I do not know my father or his family). Unfortunately through FTDNA testing I am stuck at R-P312* with no significant matches up to the 37 marker level. So basically I do not know any more about my paternal heritage now then I did over a year ago because the haplogroup I have been assigned can be from anywhere in Europe.
That said, do any of you think I would be better informed by the type of testing and results offered by 23andme? I am just looking for either a specific region or country that my paternal heritage is from.
Well, at least you'll be able to find some cousins on your paternal side. They have something called Relative Finder and if you share some ancestor with others who have taken this test, he/she will appear as a relative or cousin in whatever degree. Perhaps you'll obtain some leads regarding your paternal ancestry by comparing notes and ancestry with others on RF.
