I know its a stereotypical gross overgeneralization, but the impression I get from China is similar to what I get looking at a vast colony of ants. All moving as a group, no individuality, etc. The queen directing every facet of their daily life.

Nah China is not that totalitarian, it is more like Beijing doesn't have enough control in some areas, hence the extreme corruption in rural areas.

Definitely agreed. Russia has had hard times and I hope they them better future. We have in Finland growing Russian minority and people like them. They are one of the most wanted comers.

Authoritarianism breeds neuroticism, and neuroticism requires ever-more authoritarian management. It is a deadly cycle.

I believe neuroticism has to do with social trust. The lower the amount of social trust, the more neuroticism there is. Decentralized, autonomous, self-governing communities are based on social trust, which is the trust that your neighbors will not take advantage of you and that you, in reciprocation, will not take advantage of your neighbors. That is to say, social trust is related to personal responsibility in both oneself and ones's neighbors.

I think it is true that people like Russians and Chinese are highly neurotic. Their communities have low amounts of social trust, are not autonomous, and not self-governing. I've noticed Russians and Chinese are always paranoid that other people will take advantage of them (by other people I mean other people in their communities) When an authoritarian Tzarist-style government attempts to rule and micromanage the entire country, like in Russia or China, then individuals start to abdicate personal responsibility, leading to higher neuroticism, crime ,etc. This higher neuroticism justifies - at least in the eyes of the ruling classes - ever-increasing amounts of authoritarian rule.

In my experience Somalis have very low neuroticism because their society is nearly anarchic. There is no expectation in Somali culture for some authoritarian intervention from on high to correct disputes and injustices between people. The expectation is for individuals to settle their differences in a cooperative, non-neurotic way. In that manner, Somalis' mindsets do not suffer from paranoia and neuroticism, unlike many Russians or Chinese who have lived under Tzarist-style systems for so long.

Neuroticism can be cured, I believe through decentralizing and "democratizing" reforms. Taiwanese people are much less neurotic than Mainland Chinese people, I believe the reason for this is Taiwan does not suffer the harmful psychological effects of a hypercentralized totalitarian regime.

Yeah that's right America is more dysfunctional than Russia, if you consult the original study I posted info too, you will see on the graph that Americans are not nearly as neurotic as Russians, not even close.

We are just slightly above average, we are very extroverted. Russians are way off in their own universe.

I actually agree that Russians are very neuroticized on average. However, I do not think that neuroticism and extroversion are the same thing or that they even correlate. I do not think Russians are particularly introverted, at least not in comparison with the Chinese or Japanese. Russians are neurotics, but they are not shy neurotics.

It's even higher than Japanese (which is very high) Since I was married to a Japanese woman and lived in Japan, but have also dated and known many of Former Soviets (Russians and Ukrainians mostly) I can tell you that Japanese people are often quite 'strange' but many Russians are just dysfunctional, the one's I know here are quite smart, but usually in their personal lives shit is jacked up...the Japanese I know are pretty stable, but they often have some weird quirks, such as generally calm and rarely show negative emotions in public, but when they do get mad (like at a loss of face) they explode in a way that I rarely see in most Americans. It's like they keep too much stuff bottled up. I think this is why Japanese drink a lot, it is the only time in public they are free to speak their mind without fear of offense...

Russians on the other hand just seem very erratic in their behavior. Almost every Russian I've ever known drinks heavily (by American standards), the women seem very emotional and negative always talking about their "rok" (fate) and not at all hard to get into bed (I'm not saying they are whores, I just means easier than most American women...it's all relative) that being said, it seems they have hard times maintaining stable relationships. Many of the women seem very emotional, irrational (way more than most women, definitely more than American or Japanese women)...


I've seen this many times, it can' be coincidence. One of my Russian male friends said that it is due to Communism, but I don't think so, if you read Russian history, I think you can see a lot of this in the elites as well.

An ex-girlfriend (ethnic Russian) said that she thinks it is just "vodka"...she right now is coming off her 2nd marriage, and she is my age. :-O Most of her friends (almost all Russian and Ukrainians) are also divorced at least once, all of them are under 35...but all are educated professionals, in their personal lives they seem to live more like trailer park people. :-( It's very very odd.

Who African Americans have a Murder rate about 1/3rd higher than Russia. Even though Russia has the highest Murder rate in Europe.
Not including the fact that African Americans have a Income level that is about on par with The European Union.
