    Default INTJ personality & experiences

INTJs live in the world of ideas and strategic planning. They value intelligence, knowledge, and competence, and typically have high standards in these regards, which they continuously strive to fulfill. To a somewhat lesser extent, they have similar expectations of others.

With Introverted Intuition dominating their personality, INTJs focus their energy on observing the world, and generating ideas and possibilities. Their mind constantly gathers information and makes associations about it. They are tremendously insightful and usually are very quick to understand new ideas. However, their primary interest is not understanding a concept, but rather applying that concept in a useful way. Unlike the INTP, they do not follow an idea as far as they possibly can, seeking only to understand it fully. INTJs are driven to come to conclusions about ideas. Their need for closure and organization usually requires that they take some action.

INTJ's tremendous value and need for systems and organization, combined with their natural insightfulness, makes them excellent scientists. An INTJ scientist gives a gift to society by putting their ideas into a useful form for others to follow. It is not easy for the INTJ to express their internal images, insights, and abstractions. The internal form of the INTJ's thoughts and concepts is highly individualized, and is not readily translatable into a form that others will understand. However, the INTJ is driven to translate their ideas into a plan or system that is usually readily explainable, rather than to do a direct translation of their thoughts. They usually don't see the value of a direct transaction, and will also have difficulty expressing their ideas, which are non-linear. However, their extreme respect of knowledge and intelligence will motivate them to explain themselves to another person who they feel is deserving of the effort.

INTJs are natural leaders, although they usually choose to remain in the background until they see a real need to take over the lead. When they are in leadership roles, they are quite effective, because they are able to objectively see the reality of a situation, and are adaptable enough to change things which aren't working well. They are the supreme strategists - always scanning available ideas and concepts and weighing them against their current strategy, to plan for every conceivable contingency.

INTJs spend a lot of time inside their own minds, and may have little interest in the other people's thoughts or feelings. Unless their Feeling side is developed, they may have problems giving other people the level of intimacy that is needed. Unless their Sensing side is developed, they may have a tendency to ignore details which are necessary for implementing their ideas.

The INTJ's interest in dealing with the world is to make decisions, express judgments, and put everything that they encounter into an understandable and rational system. Consequently, they are quick to express judgments. Often they have very evolved intuitions, and are convinced that they are right about things. Unless they complement their intuitive understanding with a well-developed ability to express their insights, they may find themselves frequently misunderstood. In these cases, INTJs tend to blame misunderstandings on the limitations of the other party, rather than on their own difficulty in expressing themselves. This tendency may cause the INTJ to dismiss others input too quickly, and to become generally arrogant and elitist.

INTJs are ambitious, self-confident, deliberate, long-range thinkers. Many INTJs end up in engineering or scientific pursuits, although some find enough challenge within the business world in areas which involve organizing and strategic planning. They dislike messiness and inefficiency, and anything that is muddled or unclear. They value clarity and efficiency, and will put enormous amounts of energy and time into consolidating their insights into structured patterns.

Other people may have a difficult time understanding an INTJ. They may see them as aloof and reserved. Indeed, the INTJ is not overly demonstrative of their affections, and is likely to not give as much praise or positive support as others may need or desire. That doesn't mean that he or she doesn't truly have affection or regard for others, they simply do not typically feel the need to express it. Others may falsely perceive the INTJ as being rigid and set in their ways. Nothing could be further from the truth, because the INTJ is committed to always finding the objective best strategy to implement their ideas. The INTJ is usually quite open to hearing an alternative way of doing something.

When under a great deal of stress, the INTJ may become obsessed with mindless repetitive, Sensate activities, such as over-drinking. They may also tend to become absorbed with minutia and details that they would not normally consider important to their overall goal.

INTJs need to remember to express themselves sufficiently, so as to avoid difficulties with people misunderstandings. In the absence of properly developing their communication abilities, they may become abrupt and short with people, and isolationists.

INTJs have a tremendous amount of ability to accomplish great things. They have insight into the Big Picture, and are driven to synthesize their concepts into solid plans of action. Their reasoning skills gives them the means to accomplish that. INTJs are most always highly competent people, and will not have a problem meeting their career or education goals. They have the capability to make great strides in these arenas. On a personal level, the INTJ who practices tolerances and puts effort into effectively communicating their insights to others has everything in his or her power to lead a rich and rewarding life.

"...approach reality as they would a giant chess board, always seeking strategies that have a high payoff, and always devising contingency plans in case of error or adversity."

"...observer, values solitude, perfectionist, detached, private... does not talk about feelings, hard to impress, analytical, likes esoteric things..."

"To outsiders, INTJs may appear to project an aura of "definiteness", of self-confidence. This self-confidence, sometimes mistaken for simple arrogance by the less decisive, is actually of a very specific rather than a general nature; its source lies in the specialized knowledge systems that most INTJs start building at an early age. When it comes to their own areas of expertise -- and INTJs can have several -- they will be able to tell you almost immediately whether or not they can help you, and if so, how."

"INTJs are natural leaders, although they usually choose to remain in the background until they see a real need to take over the lead. "

"At work, INTJs use their conceptual strengths to analyze situations and then develop models to understand and anticipate through relentlessly to reach their goals. They will continue on with their plans, even in the face of adversity and data that might suggest to other more practical types that their goals are no longer feasible. By nature, INTJs are independent individualists."

I would like to hear of any experiences of being/interacting with an INTJ.

Are you asking for experiences from someone that has dealt with someone that is an INTJ, or someone that is an INTJ?

I bought a video game about 8 months ago or so, never installed it on my computer. Pretty weird huh? Then, this week, a few days ago, I installed it and started playing it. I became obsessed with it, stayed-up all night long in fact…

The name of this video game is "Stronghold 2".

You get to make Medieval castles, troops, plan sieges, everything. It is awesome!

    Anyway,

I always had doubts about (popular) Psychology tests, but, this one is very accurate. My mind & thinking is very 'logical' and precise, perhaps more-so than average. If I ever visited a doctor then I probably would be classified as "obsessive-compulsive" (OCD), which my mother has. Not to the point of disease or creating any illness, but, I think a LOT. I mean, other people think a lot too, but, it feels like my head cannot switch off.

I think other people have a switch to turn their thinking off and on. My brain isn't like that, just permanently 'on'.

I think everybody (and every mind) is different, genetically and physically speaking. And psychologically speaking. We inherent genes. We inherent brains and brain-structures. We inherent logical systems.

    I agree with you, Unome.

The INTJ hits the nail on the head for me, on so many levels that it almost worries me that people's minds could be that predictable and narrowed down to that few of types.

    Perfectionism/High-Standards.
Love of Solitude/Lack of Social Graces.
    Lost in Thought/One's Own Mind.
    Love of Abstract Ideas/Theories/Concepts.

Some people criticize that test because many people that took it once and the re-took it after several months displayed different results.

I've taken it 3 times over the course of 1 and a half years. I have gotten INTJ every single time.

Whenever I start up conversations with my friends early in the morning, they don't understand how I can even think at that hour. The "thinking on/off switch" is just stuck in the "on" position for me too.

Same with me. Every time I've turned out INTJ. Except once I hypothetically pretended to be more outgoing/extroverted, and got ENTJ. I predicted that would happen; I just wanted to see.

I agree with the description of INTJ so much it's sometimes scary! It makes me feel too predictable!

    Default INTJ Who Found Balance

I like this Myers-Briggs system of analysis as a place to begin looking at personality, though I'm sure it is nothing more than one of many valuable approaches (You can hear the everpresent "J" in my writing here, and this I've found REALLY rubs the majority of folks the wrong way! I've found compensations for that, however). I found out according to some tests that I was an INTJ, but the last time I checked was about 17 years ago when I was 17 years old. I'm curious how I may have changed since then... Of course the relevance of all of this would depend on assuming the viability of the system of personality analysis in question, but for the sake of investigation let's assume that, at least until something seems glaringly afoul of fact or reason.

INTJ... It seemed to match my personality at least insofar as it stood out in social relief, and while I never would have let that or any other pigeonhole-concept define who I was I simply used it as a hypothetical reference point. To the extent that it was true, it was useful. In another logic, to the extent that it was useful, it was true. In general it is based upon the insights into personality which were developed by Dr. Jung from his work "Personality Types", so I favor it, as his insights are profound, his scholarship immaculate, and his sincerity and intellectual honesty pristine. Besides, I agree with much of his thought about personality and the existence of the psyche and its meaning in general, at least theoretically on certain important lines... BUT I DIGRESS...

I employed the notions of this testing system to begin a long and still incomplete alchemical transformation of personality to reach true individuation and therefore true identity.

    Too INTROVERTED !!

I experimented with being more extroverted in general, especially in my reasons for feeling things, as well as in attempting to express my emotions to and with others. I found the "feeling" part of this to be the most difficult aspect of my attempts at balance. The reasons are a bit complex, but this will probably be the hardest trait to balance out toward optimality. Even so, I really feel that if I make a breakthrough on balancing this part out then my life will become VERY different, even now. I don't think I'll manage to achieve it by sheer willpower alone, since this sort of change must be FELT and SINCERE, but there are ways to.... catalyze the process.

On a pragmatic level, this has served me well. I began to do this by extroverting in general by joining the military at the age of 21. This "sharpened me up" so that I could get some "snap" to my existence as regards for realpolitik sorts of necessities. This also influenced the structure of even my most theoretical thought as well. These changes continued with long martial arts training of over 10 years. Basically I learned how to take the INTJ and fold it into an ENTJ when needed, usually at the last minute, when the shit hits the fan, or when all else fails. However, at least it's there if I need it! Sometimes it comes to the surface as a true second nature, or glows in my aura when certain people trigger it, and it lets them know better who I am. This is a benefit of extroversion generally, since it gives signals others can use to make better choices about how to deal with us, not only better for them, but better for us, too. Someone said that "We teach others how to treat us". Teaching, it so happens, is an extroversial process.

This ENTJ "cross-training" of the personality helped by my stressing thoughts over intuitions on the one hand, and stressing sense data over feelings on the other. It brought the concrete up a stage toward the abstract as well, as sensing moved up toward the first two heavies, Thinking and Intuiting. Military and Martial Arts life and training really has helped therapeutically in this way. It was rough at first, especially the grunt life in the Army, but it was worth it overall. Got my MGIB to boot, so I could later "have dessert" so to speak.

I should have said that the hardest part isn't the extroverting, but the feeling aspect of the extroverting. To let the feeling processes have too much to do with how others feel was just too much for me, and that got shut down hard early in life. Later it just couldn't resurface without the help of key forms of medicine and "life choices" which were somewhat high-risk, and too often embarrassing. In this regard one needs good influences from other people which are direct and caring. This is hard to find for some, especially for extreme INTJs like I was. I think that the main catalyst of change here has been, for me, DRUGS. Unfortunately the key drugs which can assist here are most often illegal or hard to come buy, and we don't have a medicinal culture for their use. Even so, their spotty yet strategic involvement in my life has been profound. I now dedicate more of my thought to understanding DRUGS and to their beneficial use, both physical and mental/spiritual.

Heavy exposure to humor has helped with developing a sense of humor. Sometimes getting knocked on one's duff in life can afford this benefit too, but it'd be better gained as an art of one's imagination, which I can supply very readily when I'm not trying to imagine something too abstract to be of use in the direct here and now. [Did I already mention the benefits of intelligent experimentation with non-damaging (non-psychiatric) psychoactives? Can't stress that factor enough here]. Sometimes changing habits is just not enough because 2nd nature has lots of trouble replacing 1st nature, and inculcated personality traits of youth, when teamed up with DNA activation and intense experience aetiology, while not being fully 1st nature still are very much an alloy of 1st and 2nd nature that is extremely hard to rewire... aside from receiving a miracle, or even a succession of miracles. Hmmm, medicine in this light IS a miracle. Miracles, these are nothing more or less than correctives toward becoming whole again, correctives sent from God. All correctives are medicines, and so correctives sent by God, Divine Medicine, those would all count as miracles in my book. Therefore, appropriate medical intervention (i.e.drugs...) counts as a form of miracle.

But yeah, it has been an interesting life trying to keep the best of the INTJ world that I confess I do enjoy, yet also to round it out with a healthy dose of corrective internal alchemy so as to make life even more enjoyable and good. But I have been doing well so far!

Now I'm curious about taking that Myers-Briggs test again...

    ENTJ-Cross Training, huh?

Sounds useful. A lack of empathy and feeling can definitely produce a myriad of uncomfortable situations, some of which could escalate to beyond mere discomfort.

At any rate, to be well versed in that which you are not, generally makes you stronger. Whether or not you can exemplify what you are not, in my opinion, is of less importance. To understand it, is the most fundamentally important part.

I hope to understand the military life-style before I become thrust into it, I do not know this lifestyle of extreme discipline and nearly blind obedience, but I am doing what I can to understand it. Going to MEPS gave me a good look at what that will be like.

Yep. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I credit Aristotle for pushing me into the pool. Reading his philosophy was the INTJ philosopher's equivalent to being roughed up by a drill sergeant. Unfortunately, this was not to be adequate preparation for that experience in literal reality. You are well-advised to prepare.

A lack of empathy and feeling can definitely produce a myriad of uncomfortable situations, some of which could escalate to beyond mere discomfort.
Yes. This shows that being harder on my own feelings for the sake of extroverting in a general way is only a half-step of the total solution. To really "get on with others" is the goal, but this can't be faked or forced in a meaningful way for the changes I have in mind, so other methods have to be brought into the picture. Funnily enough, getting in fistfights sort of helped out in this regard just as much as being not so much of a prude with the opposite sex and indulging more in what they have to offer. Indeed, both of these opportunities unfolded geometrically during my military service, and have kept up a respectable presence in my life ever since.

Intimacy is fascinating, because it sometimes means enduring the feeling one causes in another without turning off to it, yet without changing what you are doing. This is true for causing pain (destroying a real opponent in hand-to-hand) as well as pleasure (any comedian will be careful about laughing at his own joke while still feeling the funniness of it so it can be conveyed to the audience by suggestion). With women, intimacy strikes in the form of feeling their passion without becoming too rigid in attitude, letting oneself melt into them. This is bare-knuckles training in extroversional feeling. The social niceties are the ones I don't enjoy, because they remind too much of what ugly things society has yet to mature beyond, since they symbolize a collective "keeping the head in the sand" sort of gesture.

Indeed. As many a wise man has suggested, the golden mean is not the same for all men, nor the same for all traits. Sometimes a drop of something cures mortal diseases while two drops kills instantly. Quality over quantity rules the roost here, wholeness over intensity.

I hope to understand the military life-style before I become thrust into it, I do not know this lifestyle of extreme discipline and nearly blind obedience, but I am doing what I can to understand it. Going to MEPS gave me a good look at what that will be like.
Well, my advice is don't make it a battle of wills with them, but of wits. What I did was simply kept my real thoughts to myself as much as possible, and let the loudmouths have their say as much as they wanted. In the end they had no influence on how I really felt whether they knew it or not (I think they knew it though...) and on the other hand, they knew better than to push me too far. INTJs like me have ways of settling scores when it is required. Doing it every now and then on principle is not only a great catharsis, but it really does change your aura. It is like the 100th monkey effect. Every time you succeed at something in a sort of relationship dynamic (putting a bully in his place, for example) it affects all future instances more and more until critical mass is reached (future bullies think twice, later they just don't even notice the guy as a potential target).

As one martial artist told me: You can either be a bear or a deer. The bear doesn't need to run fast for obvious reasons. A deer needs to run fast, but only faster than the slowest of his kin. I might throw in turtle shelling as an ability. If they can't see how they might be affecting you, can't smell your emotions, then they move on to other prey (deer/turtle mode). Then again, if you have secret weapons that can hurt them, you might consider using them now and then so that it hovers in your aura like a subtle threat they CAN smell... They will look for a smaller bear if they aren't feeling energetic enough to play with you. If you want to hunt rather than be hunted, that's fine, but just remember: Every hunter is also hunted, if only by another of his own kind. There are hunters who specialize in hunting other hunters... especially overconfident ones. Kinda scary if you think about it!

But yeah, figure out what you can handle as to grown men getting doing whatever they can to destroy your comfort zone, find out what sort of discomforts of body and mind you can endure before you go in. Compare what you can do with what they want to put you through. The fewer surprises the better. Then again, don't forget your INTJ strenths. You can always keep special places in yourself locked away that they can never touch. Appreciate and nourish them always, because when you end up in shithole situations you'll need those like an underground supply of food and fuel to keep your mental army going under stress. Keep growing in your own inner ways that they can never see or sabotage. Out-think them and out-maneuver with imagination and a strong sense of humor and transcendent faith in your ideals. They can never break those sorts of things nor disgrace them. To hell with whatever they think or seem to think about you!! As to obedience, let them have your body for a time (as per your contract), but never let them have your will. Let whatever you do be YOUR decision. Even when they were trying to break me physically, I simply reasoned that the only reason I did anything they said was because I chose to for a reason higher than their command. I could say no anytime I wanted. I could walk away anytime I wanted. I could escape not only in my mind, but physically. All of the choice resided in me. In the end, when I was finally freed of that place (basic and AIT) and I was let out of that dog pound, I felt lighter than air, yet more solid than rock. I could feel and appreciate every second of my existence, every flavor, every smell, every freedom of action and luxury of thought. It was like a strong LSA trip with no negative side effects that lasted for many days, ebbing only very gradually. (I've only researched LSA, never yet indulged).

By the way, check out this description of the INTJ

    http://typelogic.com/intj.html

Lays it right out in a way that seems custom fit for the discussion. There is a key paragraph I should copy here with regard to the sort of experience you might have in the military:

n the broadest terms, what INTJs "do" tends to be what they "know". Typical INTJ career choices are in the sciences and engineering, but they can be found wherever a combination of intellect and incisiveness are required (e.g., law, some areas of academia). INTJs can rise to management positions when they are willing to invest time in marketing their abilities as well as enhancing them, and (whether for the sake of ambition or the desire for privacy) many also find it useful to learn to simulate some degree of surface conformism in order to mask their inherent unconventionality.

It is with bemused pleasure that I recommend this site to INTJs

The INTJ description sounds exactly like the profile of a cousin. It is a perfectionist, is obsessive, and lives in his world.

I have tried to bring to parties, introduce friends, but he does not want to have a social circle ...

Right now he's studying to be a Chemical Engineer ...
It's not that I hate you, but let's say that if I had two bullets and Hitler was next to you, I would rather shoot you...twice

Thank you for the advice Metaontologist.

By the way, you've got great sentence structure... something seemingly absent amongst today's populace.
