WHY HAVEN'T WE GONE BACK TO THE MOON?

Yes. Going to the moon and having wars is expensive as all hell. Besides if you ask why they have not been back there they will just say ...eh well "been there done that"

The only reason to go back would be to set up some base and the Yanks are not prepared to do this just yet.

Don't forget that the Yanks were out to prove them selves against the Soviets, there was a lot of cold war politics in the air and the Russians were showing up the Yanks big-time in the space exploration field. The Yanks never lied about other failed missions even when it was extremely embarrassing for them. In space no one can hear you scream but you can see everything!

I hate skeptics and I love conspiracy theorists but this one just does not buy me sorry...

The American military sends stuff into space all the time, month by month. Why not man back to the moon for American morale's sake?
The excuse of a war? I mean, come on...
    It's just suspicious... agreed?

Going back to the moon just for a media stunt is a waste of money. Then again, so is the war in Iraq. But I guess not to some people.

The next moon landing has to be part of something bigger, like a facility that can make money by doing something that can't be done on earth. Maybe a launching or communications base? I have no idea, but I'm sure if someone comes up with a viable plan, then we'll suddenly see launches back and forth on a weekly basis.

Money makes the world go round. And the Cold War and Space Race are over.

Americans are unanimously (pretty much) excited about space, and certainly a manned trip to the Moon...
It seems that the American has lost control of his tax money...
The Space Race can't be over, for America isn't, majority-wise, a 3rd world country... yet. We're an enthusiastic people. That's why I can't understand the "dis-connect" other that it being another early-sprouting sign that pay-slaves (the tax-payers) have been effectively trumped.
Anybody want to streak NASA headquarters with me and take the helm of the rocket blasts, sending our naked selves into floating space? I'm in if you're in.

When I invitingly say we get naked in a space ship, I refer to women only.

Actually, some hypothesis of how the moon even came to be is that two massive bodies (one of them being the Earth) collided some 4+ bya. Astronomers think the other obeject might have been as big as the planet Mars.

    Vid about it.

For the sake of the topic I'm a strong believer that we went and landed on the moon.

Yes and this theory is backed by the fact that the moon has no metallic core and subsequently, no magnetic field at all.

The movie "moon" posits a possible economic scenario for setting up a moon base which could pay for itself by supplying us with Helium 3 which is very rare on the earth but more abundant in the sand of the surface of the moon. This stuff can be used to power nuclear energy reactors. We used to get this stuff as a byproduct of nuclear weapons production but since the cold war we no longer have access to meaningful amounts.

Many nations (China, Japan, India,EU, Russia, US) have plans for manned moon missions in the next 20 years or so and I believe these projects will be wasteful unless we pool our resources and avoid doing missions which are redundant. The manned Mars mission will have to be a co-operation among nations and this is the main thing I hope to see before I die. Oh, and the confirmation of the standard model (physics) and a description of a Grand unified theory which reconciles general relativity and quantum mechanics (string theory?) would be a big bonus! of course if we do this last one, we will hopefully get a glimpse of the next level of organization of the universe or multiverse.

I believe that the Soviets landed on the moon and sold the story to the Yanks. The Yanks paid the Soviets with walrusses.

I can't believe you took what I said literally, Iraq war (well gulf war excluded) started 2003, we are talking about no activity since the 60s. I meant the space-race fell out of fashion and the penis-fencing between the US and Russia turned from space-travel to nuclear weapon programmes, involvement in world affairs (revolutions, communist/anti-communist movements). Many wars stopped the progress of further space travel, such as the vietnam war-but the main worry about Soviet Russia would have kept America constantly at it's feet-and thus, unable to dedicate time and effort to the space race. Since the fall of the red threat, America has played "world police"-which is also a giant distraction.
