Ahh, don't now any Gypsies personally, but there have been some documentaries about Latvian Gypsies who have managed to get out of that terrible circle in which they are, becoming solders, doctors, ect. And you know what there are some really rich Gypsies in Latvia and usually they are so intelligent, knowing many languages ect.

Ahh no, I just remembered, my grandmother had a Gypsies as neighbors, I think one of my aunties even dated one ... they spoke Latvian, acted like Latvians and never were blamed for any kind of criminal activities.

No, Gypsies are Gypsies, but that doesn't mean that they all are the same... That's like saying that all Finns are skiers or all French peoples are into fashion.

bwt, there is a difference between Gypsies living in Russian or Latvian societies here, but the difference is based on a language which they choose as their second language - Latvian or Russian.
There is a place in Latvia called Sabile and if I remember correctly it is mainly inhabited by Gypsies and I really haven't heard about some major crime problems there, ha ha.
Gypsies even have a cultural center there, how nice.

All I have ever heard about gypsies is bad. I have heard from some people from the former USSR that gypsies there were always in trouble with the authorities because they wouldn't send their children to school. So is there truth in this stereotype or not? Everyone in western Europe also seems to hate them. You can see, even on this thread, the most tolerant and multi-cultural Europeans are spitting at gypsies. There must be something to it.

Also to be clear, I have never knowingly met a true Roma gypsy in real life, but we did have a trailer park full of Irish Travelers in town, and those people are widely regarded as criminal scum here.

Most gypsies around here are gitanos (Iberian Gypsies) and they have introduced some slangs throughout Southern France , however they do not have the best reputation as usual but contrary to the Romanian ones , they don't search in the garbages , atleast.

Irish Travelers are known here for running scams, identity theft, walking out on bar tabs, beating the shit out of their kids in public, marrying their first cousins, and similar unsavory things.

It's like for the Jews (Ashkenazi , Sephardi etc..). All Gypsies share a common lineage (Roms) going back to South Asia.

Except travellers who are of fully european stock . I doubt travellers would mix with Roma peoples, some travellers I have met hate a lot the gypsies (romani)
