    Why is that?

    worker productivity is based on 1. Physical Capital/worker(K) 2. Human Capital/worker(H) 3. Natural Resources/Worker(N) 4. Technological Knowledge(T)

A lower population means all 4 factors of productivity will be higher and a country's production capability and growth will be much higher as a result. There will be more investments from abroad, better education, better health and nutrition for the general population, more resources for R&D, and technological development will be facilitated. This is straight out of classical macroeconomics. There are really no advantages of having too many people at China's stage of development.

Only US, China and India got big enough populations to become superpowers. Singapore and France will never become superpowers because their populations are too small. If there was an african country with 1,4 billion people it would probably also become some kind of superpower. Population is power. The scandinavian countries are the most sucessful countries in the world but they still got nothing to say because they are too small. The combination of fast economic growth and a big population will make you a superpower. And no one would really care for China if they were 200 million.
"The man of the future will be of mixed race. Today's races and classes will gradually disappear owing to the vanishing of space, time, and prejudice. The Eurasian-Negroid race of the future, similar in its appearance to the Ancient Egyptians, will replace the diversity of peoples with a diversity of individuals."

Well the British Empire had a small population, the Spanish and Portuguese empire had a small population and they had their turns being superpowers. The USSR was a recent example of a country had small population relative to its size and was still a superpower for several decades. China's population is 4 times the United States with rough the same land mass. If China's population was only 200 Million it would still have the potential to be a superpower no doubt.

china's government is the most efficient form of government there will be no revolutions perhaps in decades to come but of course there are less freedoms and rights but that only matters if ur a religious falon gung nut or an anti-government activist media attention seeker.

The vast majority of the Falun Gong nutcases and anti-government forces whether they are religions, or independence seekers are funded and being used by the United States government to undermine China's image and used as agents to destabilize the country. Most of these people are more concerned with destroying the CCP regardless of the consequences and have no concern of the good of the country or the Chinese people. I would consider most of them to be traitors and counterproductive to bringing actual change to China.

The reason for the european empires is because they had access to technology that would be considered as alien at that time in the rest of the world. Today most countries are equal in technologic terms. Also in that age it was all about invading and stealing. Today it is all about economy. Great Britain even if they had a growth of 20% per year in the next 50 years would catch up to China or india if they were at the same start point. I would say the only empires we have today are Russia and the US both with large populations.

Technology is definitely not equal in today's world, and first world country would never share cutting edge technology with 3rd world countries. Developing countries like India and China lag behind in many areas and their huge population inhibits technology advances and slows development for the reasons I stated earlier.

Russia is a different case from China, it has a much smaller population/area. Their population is slight more than 1/10 that of China's population with a MUCH larger landmass. They have a highly educated workforce and are ahead in some heavy industries and aeronautics. The reason the average Russia has a higher standard of living than the average Chinese or Indian person is because of their smaller population and abundant resources.
