How many have been thought to be of another background by people from your own ethnic group. This kind of happened to me in Italy, but I was an American tourist, so in a way they were correct. I am however of Sicilian ancestry on both sides. People in Rome assumed I was American and spoke English to me before I opened my mouth. I am somewhat fair for southern Italian, but maybe they could just tell a tourist. In Napoli a women asked me if I was Italian, but when I told her to guess she was not sure!

You were not mistaken for a foreigner in your country. You are American so you were indeed a foreigner in another country.

It has happened to me once when an ukranian immigrant approached me in Ukranian. I told him in portuguese i couldn't understand and then he asked me for a cigarette in portuguese. It was very bizarre.

However since it was a foreigner who made the mistake, i'm not sure if it counts.

I don't know if this scenario counts, but when I visited Ethiopia, a few months ago, Ethiopians could tell I was Ethiopian (look wise). They could also tell I was from America because of my slight American accent in my Amharic. I don't think they considered me a foreigner or American though, I'm still an Ethiopian to them.

some Bosnian guys here used to think i was Bosnian, they used to talk to me in Bosnian, it took a few days until they figured out i was not being rude as i in fact did not understand what they said to me.. i guess there where some truth to my brother calling me Kosovo-Albanian all the time :P
I once tried thinking for an entire day, but I found it less valuable than one moment of study. I once tried standing up on my toes to see far out in the distance, but I found that I could see much farther by climbing to a high place.

They have mistaken me with spaniard, jewish and even a gringo because my skin is too light.

Once ago while walking in the street this young girls gave me this little fliyer in which they asked for people with foreing looking to act as extras in TV advertising, I never went tho.

I have been mistaken as a foreigner in Turkey about a 100 times.

LOL, I love the way I was ignored and people spoke directly to my bf asking "where is she from?"

That why I said they were kind of right. It happened at fiumicino airport, customs, they wanted to search my carry on bag and asked me if I spoke English. Maybe it was my brand of suitcase?
