Angolan Armed Forces (Forças Armadas de Angola) formerly known as The People's Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola (Portuguese: Forças Armadas Populares de Libertação de Angola) or FAPLA

Together with the Cubans they kicked out South Africa from Angola. Well done brave warrior gunmen.
I remember some fool on this site, that always used to go on about how South Africa was so great and almost made nuclear weapons. I wonder why the mighty South African military lost to Angolans and Cubans? So much for almost nuclear weapons huh!?

Ew! That proposed flag is pretty ugly.

Although I don't blame Angolans, especially rural Angolans, for wanting to change it.

Really, their flag was originally the flag of a political party, the MPLA, a leftist party that has strong support among urban intellectuals, and not everybody subscribes to that ideology. Rural Angolans tend to be more right-wing than their urban counterparts, for example. A country's flag should be non-partisan IMO.

The second flag doesn't resemble the flag of any of the political parties, it's pretty neutral. So even though it doesn't look as cool, if I was Angolan, I'd prefer it on those grounds.

That bottom flag is bland as fuck. They could at least keep the machete/panga/sword.

Yeah... maybe they could keep the sword but get rid of the red and black bands and yellow star, which are the colours of MLPA.

The sun logo is a symbol of the country's history, however, found on ancient cave paintings in the area.

It's obviously up to Angolans to decide... but Angola did have a civil war between right and left-wing militias in the recent past, and it was not pretty. Land mines were used and everything.

It could well be that people who don't support the MLPA are fine with the current flag. I mean, we had similar debates in Canada in the past over our current flag, some people saying it resembled too much the insignia of a particular political party (although it was used by the military for a long time)... but now supporters of all parties embrace it. We didn't have a civil war, though.

I am finally going to Angola this September, I have everything booked for my trip, I am going with friends (2 of them are Angolans and they will help us get around the city)
I will be going to Luanda but I would like to venture around other parts of the country

So if I dont come back to this forum, it is not because I have been kidnapped and killed
It is because I have finally returned back to Angola where I belong

for those who dont know, Luanda is the most expensive city in Africa and one of the most around the world
so I am looking forward to see how different it is when it comes to expensive cities in Mexico vs Luanda
also I want to see if I can spot similarities between Angolans and Mexicans, after all, they were the biggest black population in the country at some point so there has to be similarities one way or another
