Mayor Dave Bing is trying to save Detroit by offering incentives to lure residents back to abandoned neighborhoods.
One program offers $150,000 in housing renovation money and requiring only $1,000 down to police officers who are willing to relocate to the city. Another offers college graduates $2,500 to rent and $20,000 forgivable loan to buy properties.
Potential home buyers can choose from plenty of cheap or free homes, especially in the blighted neighborhoods of Woodward Ave. and Brush Park.

Is this a bad omen? Will the rest of America follow suit? What can be done to reverse this situation?

I believe it is a bad omen, combined with 45.8 million collecting food stamps or 1 in 7, some of the current news headlines "New-home sales fall, 2011 could be worst year yet". It is interesting to see how many police officers take up the offer, that will tell you how bad the situation has become. Maybe it would have been better if it had stayed a Canadian City "Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit"

Detroit has beem struggling for decades to confront its enormous glut of abandoned residences, many of which are targets of arson and havens for criminal activity. In fact, before this little program, the city spent millions bulldozing some of these architectural treasures down. Detroit only has about half as many people as it id in 1950 and is much poorer today. The city could no longer afford to assign police patrols to the vacant areas and could not provide services to those neighborhoods.

They are going to have to remember that if they do decide to go ahead with this program that they will need to resume municipal services for the homeowners. I do hope they have not overlooked that small detail.

In German TV there was recently a reportage about police officers and firefighters who were laid off in Camden. Sounds like good opportunity for them.

Wow...even they heard about that! Yes, there was a massive layoff of police and firefighters in Camden, one of the most crime-ridden cities in the entire United States. The city could no longer afford to pay out salaries.

Detroit and Camden sucks balls. You have to be bat-shit crazy to move into Detroit. There is something called 'dying' that should be considered before accepting supposedly juicy offers from the city. Their homes will be ransacked the minute they step out the door. What guy with a wife or girlfriend and especially with children is going to want to put them at risk?

They need to bring business to the area by offering huge (and I do mean huge) incentives if they are serious about bringing the city back to some minor semblance of its former self but the city appears to be too far gone. It looks like that Carpenter film with Kurt Russell "Escape from L.A."

Most likely they did overlook the details.

Detroit isn't an example of an American city in the near future but it is an example of incompetent politicians running a city.

Dr. Dre is from Compton, L.A.

I'm sure you could buy it. It doesn't matter that you're in England. What you could do with it is the question.

why don't they just give them to homeless people or something? oh, probably because they want good residents and not trashy ones, nevermind.
