    One of the best preserved very old castles is this, Château de Foix

    Most castles in the region was deliberately dismantled by Cardinal Richelieu in the seventeenth century, but this one was not.

    Unlike French castles, which had the wide donjon tower for final protection, German Medieval castles often had a bergfried tower, which was more slender. It is thought it was for a last stand until reinforcements could arrive.

    Fort-la-Latte in NW France (Brittany). It was used for the siege battle in "The Vikings" (1958).
