I wonder if a good sample of Zape take the AncestryDNA test how much IVC/GH and Senegal they would score because so far these are the biggest regions of Sierra Leoneans...we should note that back then that we didn't have those artificial borders/frontiers and that it is important not to take the region attribution from AncestryDNA too literally; per se, the IVC/GH region may also indicate ancestry from Southern Burkina Faso, Liberia, and the Forest region of Guinea, because those populations are closely related and also because of past migrations.... between the 17th-18th/19th centuries, there were a lot of exchange, migrations and then cultural assimilation over these areas due to conflicts and instabilities, for example when the Adako clan from the Asante moved to the West and then became the Baule, they fought against the Senoufo and some Mande groups to take their territories and during that war they made a lot of captives from those groups that were turned into Canga/Kanga (slaves who were then assimilated to the Baule) and established a network of exchange with the Bambara/Malinke (from IVC/Guinea/Mali tout confondu)....so there could have been people that were captured by Malinke in Guinea/Sierra Leone area per se and were transported all the way to IVC to be sold to the Baule and then sold to Europeans, vice versa (so some captives that departed from a given port, let say cape lahou in IVC, or cap coast in GH per se, may not have been from the area where they departed from Africa)....similar situation happened with Samory Toure who had an alliance with the Baule (originally Asante, GH) and the Malinke people of Marabadiassa in IVC (originally Hausa from Kano, Nigeria); He made a big raid in the Northern Part of IVC and sold most of his captives to the Baule who were then assimilated.
wow you know your history, very interesting (i find intelligent women very attractive) i didnt know so much about the wars of those regions, the only thing i knew was about the fulani being known to purposely capture other africans and take them to the ports to be sold into slavery and they would get as rewards weapons. About the Zape, my guess is as good as yours because iv looked into them before and have found nothing, they could very well be temne as you said due to possible conflicts over there and they probably were part of it with or without any intentions. Due to the fact of their unknown whereabouts, i always thought that it is likely that the zape was entirely taken out of africa by way of slavery (meaning literally all of them were taken to the point where non were left or very little that they deluted), this im sure has happened, god knowns how many more tribes or ethnic groups there were before slavery. In DR alone we have recorded over 30 different African tribes (the exact number being 33) but perhaps there was alot more. These things happen, including even several towns in spain becoming entirely empty during the colonial period due to problems over there that made them leave and later these places were repopulated by different spaniards or europeans that are not originally from there (but thats a different story). I have always said that we have to kind of assume or estimate realistically the possible african origins for us new worlders with little to full SSA ancestry because as you said it is a very complex history and definitely not a simple one, many places were displaced by another tribe unative to specific areas in africa. My understanding would be perhaps using anthropological measurements and DNA to connect to a people, this is the samething with the Igbos of Nigeria and Cameroon with the whole Biafra war they had, which was one a country between those two nations, biafra was almost exclusively igbo, cameroon has a lot of igbos and the igbos are mostly in southeast nigeria which happens to be bordered with cameroon.
