Out of curiosity, are you viewed as an American outsider by Mayan folks from the highland?

Just wondering, cause at least from my experience, I'm seen as an Americanized city boy by Mexican countryside mestizos .

That depends. When I dress like a local, for safety reasons I try not to make it obvious I'm an American, people think I'm a local in medium size to larger towns...maybe a guy from a neighboring town. The reason I believe so is because people, especially vendors, start speaking to me in the local Mayan language.

But when I go to a really small villages, I'm sure people can easily tell I'm an outsider and an American.

Btw, what makes you stick out as an American?

Interesting, of course it's not smart to blatantly stick out like a tourist, but sometimes there are subconscious stuff you can't cover up.

For the most part, it's my Americanized Chicano accent when I speak Spanish, though I would guess some mannerisms as well. I don't stick out in busier Mexican cities if I don't open my mouth, but on the rural ranchos, people can tell right away lol.

The full blood people in their traditional fashion are beautiful as well, but they may not be deemed as such to outside observers.
I have a hard time telling the difference from the pure ones, the problem is we don’t know what true natives look like from some of these tribes.

Also depends on one's definition of "purity", cause if they're around 90% Native, that's close enough for me. For instance, there's tons of White Americans who are seen as "pure white", but in reality they have some small admixture in them.
