I learned through my mexican side that I have ancestors from Italy, Portugal, France, Crete
Initially I had thought I was only going to have Spanish with a bit of French, Amerindian and a dash of black African but that wasnt the case. I didnt come out with any SSA ancestry and I couldnt locate an African ancestor on the records. My family has lived in Mexico City for many years, they belong to the early settlers of that area.
The most surprising find was the Greek ancestor from Crete, his parents came from Heraklion. I did read about the Greek population of colonial Mexico, they helped Spain conquer Mexico. Majority were coming directly from the Greek islands.
My italian ancestor came from Sicily, he was given the last name of Siciliano
There is another Italian ancestor with the last name Neri
My Portuguese ancestors seemed to be Sephardic Jews, they came from various parts of Portugal but primarily from the central part of the nation. Contrary to the Portuguese that northeastern Mexico recieved which were Portuguese from the Azores and Madeira

Things I already knew but were confirmed through dna was my Otomi indigenous roots, made me happy to had been able to confirm this. I also confirmed the French heritage. I did confirm a colonial Basque ancestor, I thought it was going to be a lot more recent and that there was going to be a lot more Basques in my family tree but I only found one. Most of my Spanish ancestors were from the Southern part of Spain, followed by Central Spain and then Northern, my Northern Spanish ancestors were primarily from Cantabria and Asturias.

That I'm just as genetically diverse as people who are more mixed than me "on paper" (family trees). So just because you are less mixed based on paper trail doesn't mean you're also more homogeneous genetically.
