Default Siddi People (Africans in India?)

The Siddi are an ethnic group in Sub-continent mainly in India and Pakistan of Black African and/or Afro-Arab descent. The Siddi population is currently estimated to be 20,000–55,000, with Gujarat and Hyderabad in India and Makran and Karachi in Pakistan as the main population centres.

Siddis are mainly Sufi Muslims, although some are Hindus and some Roman Catholic Christians. Villages in the forests of northern Karnataka, for instance, have residents who likely are descended from Mozambican/Angolan slaves who escaped from Portuguese traders and ships.
Thoughts? Many assume it was through Arab slavery...

If not for the castration of many African males who were slaves, south Asia would have a much more significant African precense. I believe Bernard Lewis has argued that the massive trade of slaves by Arab/Persian muslims set the basis for the European Trade that came after it.

I think the Siddi people are the legacy of the Portuguese and their arrival to the Indian Subcontinent. The Sheedi Markanis who live in Pakistan in its Baluchistan province are related to Oman. I think The history of the two is different.

I was talking generally about the history & presence of Africans in South Asia. There was an Indian Ocean slave trade that preceded the Portuguese.

I don't think the Portuguese (or Dtuch) would have gotten into this trade without a prior template set by the Muslim slave traders.

Ancient world economy was no different from the present day world economy, it was based on cheap labor and profit. Almost all societies did have slaves. It was not anything new. Most Armies of the ancient world were built by slaves of all kinds.

Slavery was not invented by any body. Romans had slaves, Egypt , India, and China had slaves. I think the Eurpeoans when they discovered New lands and colonized the world, needed cheap labor. They would have enslaved anybody, it just happened that Africa was weaker and more susceptible to exploitation and its location was near the New World and Indian Ocean. They would have been slaves anyways.

I am not saying it was "invented" by anyone, but many like to gloss over the fact that Middle Easterners had a massive Indian ocean slave trade going.
