Another desert from space, this time Tunisia. This is a dune desert called Erg el Djeneien or Irq al Janā'in. It's not a big region like the previous, though, but a rather unknown desert in southern Tunisia, with big dunes.

(apparently postimage scale the images down now, it was much higher resolution when I uploaded the image!)

A good shot of Iran's Lut desert, one of the most desolate and lifeless places on earth. Dark parts to the right are giant dunes, the stripes to the left are khaluts (yardangs).

It is from this page, which has a lot of such pictures:http://www.eosnap.com/snapshots/dune...t-desert-iran/

I had heard of record high temperatures in this desert, and now I confirmed, 71 °C, insane.

Interesting, 300m dunes, another alien type region, it would be good no one get lost there.

Lut is not the only hot desert in Iran. Here's a pic of the dramatic looking Nayband wildlife Reserve desert area, which is NW of Lut. That is a very remote and desolate place.
To me it kind of looks like marble in the satellite image!

It's mostly salt flats and stone desert, but the dark parts to the east are sand deserts similar to Lut.

Zoom of the southern part of the above dunes- some of those dunes are very big:

    (Map from ArcGIS)

Another zoom, this time in one of the "shapes", zooming shows that it is yardangs. This desert was not traversed until 1960.

It's easy to get lost in this kind of landscape. (I used Google Maps for this picture)

PS. the first image had far greater resolution, but apparently there must still be some kind of limitation in Postimage, because the image is scaled down!

Another extreme desert - Grand Erg Oriental in Algeria. This satellite picture is from the southern region, which is the largest area of pure star dunes in the world. Each dune is typically around a mile wide. Star dunes are those tall pyramid shaped dunes which is the poster child for the Sahara. In the southern belt towards the edge of the dune field they average 230 m in height.

Another image from Algeria (Algeria is big) This one is more south in central Sahara - it actually looks a bit like the picture from Iran I posted above. Most of it has no "Erg" which is what the big dune fields are called. Only in the SE corner of this image can an erg be seen (the rotated Africa shaped yellow area, which is around 350 km²).
