the thing is, the line between the "rich" and the "poor" in my example is quite blurry. if someone gets a full time job instead of milking the welfare system for years - in most cases they fall into the income tax paying bracket automatically -and lo and behold they start voting for pro-business candidates who promise to cut taxes etc.
happens to a lot of college graduates here, they go from "liberal" to "conservative" within a couple of years after filling out their income tax forms

this is a slippery slope though as the list of the "non essential" items tends to expand and the taxes tend to grow overtime hurting the consumers, sales figures and as a result - the manufacturers which leads to cost cutting, layoffs etc.

Food; clothing; medicine; shelter. Those are the only true necessitates.

who's to say what the "necessities" are?
If I live out in the boonies 50 miles away from the closest traffic light then guess what my necessities are? (that would be a car and a full tank of gas).

and even IF we all agree on what the necessities are, then is Hugo Boss a necessity or Wrangler will do?
is filet mignon considered a necessity or only potatoes?
    etc etc.

It is not theft. But it is annoying when one realizes that many get away with it. TDS is a boon, but a lot of players circumvent this. In India, ~2-5% of the taxable populace actually do so. No one owns up.

Cars are considered non-necessities. You're not allowed to own one if you're on welfare for that very reason, at least here in Sweden. Not to mention our fuel taxes.

My point is that if you pay taxes by buying your own things instead of having money taken by force from your salary, it is more voluntary. That way, people don't have to be pissed off at the unemployed stealing their money, as even they could theoretically be paying their cash checks.

Then I go up, and look at myself in profile and from the front and in all angles, in all my mirrors that I have mounted up everywhere, and realise my Mongolian heritage and how the Swedes view me. Sometimes I cannot see the difference between myself and a Mongol, if the environment is cloudy.

    ...
yeah but what if you NEED a car to be able to get around?
to me, allowing "the system" to decide what's essential and what's not is just giving them more power.

also, these "luxury" items are typically more expensive anyway. so even with a flat sales tax, the tax paid on those "non essential" items is higher.

Same here. Although welfare queens can own cars here.

It depends where you live in the US. You cannot live without a car on the West Coast(excluding SanFran maybe). So, I would personally say it's a necessity.

I too consider them as necessities. The government, however, does not.
