Default Do people tend to date/marry their parents?

Often considered a controversial idea, some speculate that since humans are obviously attracted to familiarity, many end up subconsciously choosing a mate that resembles their parent.

Of course this won't apply to every single pairing out there, though would you say it has some validity?

If it has substance, is it caused more by biological or environmental factors?

Have you come across any couples that have similarities between spouse and parent?

From a personal perspective, my husband is a lot like my dad. Both are quiet, nerdy types. They like to read and they don't like going out. They don't watch sports, which is unusual for men around here. Physically, they both have brown hair and wear glasses. I like my dad and I think he's a good guy, so maybe that's why I was drawn to a man similar to him.

And, I am very much like my husband's mother. We look a lot alike, and have comparable personalities. She and I get along great, which is nice.

So I am not sure if it's common for people to "marry their parents" but in my case, I did.

Wonder if this is the case for gay people also

I try to avoid women whom are like my mother, because my mother is like a 50+ teenager and have always been like that, same with most women on that side of the family.. But some of the women I have dated are a bit like that nonetheless, but those relationships never worked anyways...

The woman I am currently seeing every now and then is not like that at all, but we are not serious, just for the company..
I once tried thinking for an entire day, but I found it less valuable than one moment of study. I once tried standing up on my toes to see far out in the distance, but I found that I could see much farther by climbing to a high place.

Hmmm... I've never truly acknowledged it but I am drawn to women who are similar to my mother. My pops was a wealthy rather estranged businessman who was traveling through 98%~ of my childhood and then he'd come back home and shower me with money and gifts to compensate for lost time (we never truly bonded much) so I got quite close to my mom (very loving mama's boy relationship) who runs her own business even now and has been keeping the Sheikh living very comfortably since his early teens when Papa & Mama got a divorce.

So yeah, my mom's generally a pretty intelligent (extremely pretty too, should see pictures of her when she was young) and tough woman. Very independent and such & she's not much of a "girly woman", shall I say. I've noticed that I'm drawn to that. I tend to despise and be repulsed by weak women or ones who seem all "girly girl" like or ones who are clingy and in need of constant attention.

My mother and I kiss and hug each other four to five times every time we see each other but my parents generally gave me a very "do you boo" childhood. No hanging over me, constantly calling to see how I was doing etc. So I'm often repulsed when I notice a chick calls a lot or expects me to. Idk how to explain it but I admire independence and am quite attracted to women who seem like they don't "need me".

I suppose there's that. Kinda weirds me out though... That I'm attracted to women who remind me of my mother (although I'm not often conscious of the fact that they're like her until later).

I'll address the rest of this thread's questions later, my mestizo brother.

Lol, funny considering that many gay men have heavy duty daddy issues.

    Interesting answers

I'm not exactly sure how my case works out, I'm an adoptee so I don't know if I get attracted to my biomother's qualities or my adoptive parents'. To throw more confusion in there, my adoptive parents were always working, thus I spent most of my childhood with my godmother or friends' families.

I've noticed that I'm very physically attracted to balanced and indo mestizas, which none of my caretakers looked like(all pred euro mestizo or white american), though it was rumored that my biomother looks very indigenous. Not sure if this is because of a biological tick or I'm looking at women who resemble my features more(I'm balanced mestizo). Also, I don't exactly know my biofamily's personality, so not sure if I'm attracted to the girls that share personalities with my adoptive family/caretakers or biofamily.

My mom is pale and she has light green eyes and brown hair. A lot of the girls that ive liked in the past have had similar facial features,green/hazel eyes and brown hair. I'm not sure if I subconsciously favor women who resemble, remind me of my mom or if its just a coincidence. I don't think my favoritism towards green eyes has anything to do with my mom because green eyes have always been my favorite eye color.

Its not like her type of appearance is rare or anything. Brown haired, light eyed white chicks are a common sight in the United States. Her appearance hasn't effected my dating preferences too much because im attracted to a verity of different races, ethnicities and women who have other hair/eye color combinations.

For some reason I like woman who like the woman in my mom's side like in personality and looks. They are all mestiza but in my father's side the woman look way more Euro with little non-euro admixture which I don't really find all attracted to.

True it could all be BS, though it's always interesting to ask questions .
