Default Sexualization of Somali music videos

    Hey all------

Lately there seemed to be a trend of sexual or erotic theme in Somali music videos. Which is very uncommon in the Somali media in general. Since Somalis are predominantly Muslims and semi-conservative republicans via their patriarchal clan-oriented culture such sexual theme in a public platform is frowned upon. Even simple affectionate display between the opposite sex is often glowered at in Somali society.

Brief background; in the last 2-3 years there has been a number of sexual theme Somali music videos. Mostly coming from diaspora such as USA, UK and Kenya. Reading youtube comments and dislike buttons, I can notice there are vast opinions supporting or against such videos, though those against it are more dominant and numerous.

Short preview example's of such videos

Personally I'm not fond of sexualization of music videos or media in general. Mainly because I'm concerned towards young girls, the objectification of girls and women and the psychological scar it can leave behind. This is not just a problem for girls but also boys.

However of the back of my mind, I'm also quite pleased to see the modernisation and secularism of Somali media's especially those in the diaspora. To witness such anti-Islamic trend in Somali music videos does gives hope to us secular Somalis.

    #Do you recommend more sexualization?
    #Are you against it?
#Are there better ways of secularising the Somali media? Give examples

Maybe I'm just used to American music videos but the so called "sexualization" in the example above seemed rather awkward to be honest.

I'd say if one does lean towards more sexualization in videos, then they better do it right .

I think different culture's have their own unique way of sexuality. For a non-Somali, that particular video might come across awkward but it is still sexual. I agree, being surrounded by Western sexuality, I also see the awkwardness you have picked on. However the video is still sexual (attire, body-language etc).

Good, excellent, sex is a natural instinct, nothing wrong with it.

    @Beyoku

The concept of this thread was about mainstream Somali media or mainstream media's in general. Obviously Somalis can be very sexual people, but they usually do it behind close doors. Or through other cultural means such as poetry and traditional dances. But full blown sexualization in mainstream Somali media is a highly uncommon and something newly trending lately.

The normalised sexual theme mainstream Somali media can be
    .

This is just standard Somali sexuality in mainstream Somali media, people will not find it unusual. However soft-porn type of music videos is very uncommon and like I said starting to trend in mainstream Somali media (mainly diaspora).

Interesting to see this trend, however not surprising imho as the diaspora tends to have very liberal segments and can be very disconnected from social trends back home. I also think it's very mild, compared to what we have in the Arab world, coming from within! (not diaspora)

    (Warning: Bad music ahead)

don't know who this is, just found it on youtube, I think she's Egyptian:

Well, traditionally the entertainment industry has always been seen as a 'repulsive world' by society and authorities. Even in the time of the Romans actors and singers enjoyed a bad reputation because they challenged the values of society.
