No, I just guess at the amount of carbs and how much insulin to take. It will shorten my life, and I accept that.

Damn that sucks. What a disability.

You really should reconsider start counting your calories, it's not difficult and there are great apps for it today. One of the best life's changes I've ever done, strongly recommend it.

I expect it would be easy if everything I ate was prepared in a package. But what I eat is a lot of home cooking. How do know the nutrient profile of a bowl of casserole? It takes adding up all the contributing ingredients in a spreadsheet and multiplying by the percentage that represents the portion. And I would have to do that every day.

Yes, but it doesn't have to be.

That's the biggest mistake you can do, even if you don't have any type of diabetes. I never cook food these days. Maybe like once a year or something, if that.

Cooking your food is classic mainstream thinking, and you really should stop doing that. It's just a waste of time, it's generally more expensive, it's bad for the environment, it's really not healthy and so on.

And look, even if you cook your food, there's no excuse not to count your calories. I count all my nutrients even when I cook food.

As I was saying, there are excellent calorie apps these days, actually most of them suck, but anyway, some are okay, some are better than others and so on.

Here's how I do: it takes me 30 seconds to add a new food product into my calorie app, with the macronutrients (it takes like a minute or so if I'm going to add all the additional micronutrients); once done, you never have to do it again. Then I just place a huge bowl on my digital kitchen scale, and pour soy meal powder on the bowl, and then some stevia ketchup, spices, phytosterol enriched butter and so on, and then 1 liter of boiled water. For every ingredient I put in the bowl, I weigh every single one of them, and then I just put in the numbers in the calorie app, and then I have like exactly how much of this and that ingredient combined, for the total calorie intake of the day (including the water intake).

Now, soy meal soup can taste great if you do it right with all the condiments and so on, and it's low carb (below 100 g), but I recommend a different diet, it's also more portable, I take this diet with me to the gym and drink it up there after I've finished training:

    ^^ This is great stuff.

Here's what I take with me to the gym, and keep in mind, this is my entire meal throughout the day:

^^ That's oat flour and soy protein isolate powders in the Mutant mug, hemp and chia seed along with raw cocoa nibs in the purple box, and various multivitamins. I meticulously count all ingredients so I get 1600 kcal, and it's 130 g protein, 130 g carbs and 59 g fat. I could go for a really low carbs diet too, like below 20 g carbs per day, but I really love carbs, plus oat has some pretty damn excellent carbs, and it's important for the brain to get some carbs too. But carbs are technically not really essential, as long as you keep the fat and protein high enough, you can do without carbs. I strongly recommend you to keep your carbs limited to palatinose/isomaltulose though.

And the best part? No cooking involved. I just throw the vegan powders into the mug along with 1.5 liters of filtered, cold water, and the hemp/chia seeds and cocoa nibs into the plastic box, and then the multivitamins, this all takes like 5 minutes at most. Then when I get home, I just wash the mug for like 30 seconds with some hot water, and it's all done. No hours wasted on dishwashing or cooking junk food. It's smooth, fast, flexible, portable, environmental, simple, healthy, nutritious as hell, really tasty, damn hardcore and best of all, full control over every single nutrient

I'm just saying man, mainstream thinking ain't hardcore

Home cooking is not something I do out of rationality. I just like home cooking.

Inferiority is not rational You really should give my superior diet a try, you'd feel like 18 again, and it would give you full control over the carbs for your insulin shots.

Anyway, back to diabetes... how precise do you have to be with the insulin, like how much insulin do you have to take if you're going to eat 100 g carbs? And does it make any difference if the carbs are slow or fast? I'm talking about glycemic index/load here.

I no longer keep track of slow-versus-fast carbs. One way or the other, 100 g of carbs would require about 30 units (hundredths of a CC) of Novolog (fast-acting) insulin.

So what happens when you take, say, 35 units per 100 g carbs? Do you feel dizzy or off? How much would that shorten your life if you did it every day and overdosed 10 units?

Guessing the carbs means you can't eat buffet, and that sucks. Also you don't really get it right if you guess the macronutrients.

It used to be that taking even just a little too much insulin would cause me to get dizzy and stupid. At worst, it would cause unconsciousness. But, over about twenty years, my body has since adapted, after living through so many such episodes, and I maintain full composure even with dangerously low glucose, though I can still sense it. A typical restaurant meal is almost always high carb, but a buffet is ideal: I can focus more on the protein and greens, less on the carbs.
