The same goes if you want to visit Brazil. People at their embassy here practically made it mandatory before their issuing the corresponding visitor's visa.

    Edit:

But... It isn't as severe as @DragonRouge is making it(no offense to you Rouge). As long as you take your vaccines and pills then you are good. Its not like you're going to be in an African swamp(or are you?). White people go on Safaris all the time in Africa. Hell, in Ethiopia I was talking to a Dutch couple from Holland who lived in the rural part of Tanzania.
The doctor probably has to tell you the worst case scenario. And no, I will be nowhere near a swamp.

Both South Africa and Namibia require Canadians to have vaccine certificates for entry. I think this has more to do with the fact that so many Canadians aren't vaccinating their kids... in fact, South Africa only started requiring this after the measles outbreak in Vancouver. I almost want to tell the guy who stamps my passport "Look man, I'm from the other side of the country, we're vaccinated. They're a bunch of hippies over there."

But yeah, I had to get the measles and polio vaccine again to get my certificate because the doctor couldn't find my records. When she learned South Africa did that, she was practically singing their national anthem. People who work in health care are pretty frustrated about anti-vaxxers, and think countries putting such restrictions on Canadians is a good thing.

It would only be during the late XIXth century when the Yanks and others would come up with the vaccines, making these islands and other tropical regions of the world safe for northerners once and for all.
There is a place in Nigeria (I think) nicknamed "The White Man's Graveyard" because so many of them died of tropical diseases.

Come to think about it, the parts of Africa which have the largest white populations today (Western Cape in South Africa, Erongo region of Namibia) you have the lowest risk of these diseases. That is a good part of my trip. I don't have to start taking the anti-malarials until I get to Kunene region of Namibia, that's what the doctor told me.

    Here's another scary tropical disease

But, as I mentioned in another thread, there have been cases in Canada in the last couple years. Mostly among dogs. Only one or two human infections, but many reported dog deaths, including in my own province.

I don't swim in fresh water, though... prefer the ocean. Lakes get warm on a hot day and swimming in them doesn't cool you off. On one of those scorchers, I like to jump into the cold North Atlantic.

Various resources and doctors recommend vaccines for different tropical countries you visit. Usually, vaccines are similar. You cannot be vaccinated from every possible disease. Only against common diseases.

There are also water based diseases such as cholera, polio with dysentery (diarrhea) being most common. WHO estimated 3.4 mln dying each year from water borne diseases alone.

A friend of mine visiting India said the quality of drinking water was poor. Even bottled water. They boiled bottled water before they drunk it or risked getting their vacation spending in toilets.

Most mammal females have breasts near their hips. Elephants, just like us , have breasts on their chest.
