    Default The Picts

The Pictish nation is definitely a fascinating one worthy of study for those interested in the origins of those ancient Caledonians who gave the Roman administrators of Britannia so much trouble. Here are some links to potentially explore for a discussion on the subject: http://tied.verbix.com/archive/article7.html, http://skyelander.orgfree.com/scot3.html, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/scie...-Scotland.html, http://www.messagetoeagle.com/picts-...hern-scotland/,

It seems so, according to a MacRae family historian from Fort William. My branch of the MacDonald clan seems to connect to the MacRaes of the 1500s and this historian avers that we descend from one Giric who was nicknamed Mac Rath, or Son of Fortune. He seems to have been a semi- mythical character who reigned over the Picts as king in the late ninth century. My cousin on that side of the family has had extensive DNA research done and he was the one this Scottish historian contacted..

According to family oral history, I'm descended from the Picts too, on my mother's father's side.

My ancestry is 62.5% British (English, Welsh, Scottish, and Ulster Scot), 25% Czechoslovakian, and 12.5% Dutch-Belgian-French-German-Swedish ... and distant links from all over Europe

Fancy that! My mother's father's side of the family is what I am speaking about, too. If the Giric tale is a true one, it might explain why my 3X great grandfather, James McDonald II's brother, Elihu, chose Gregory as a surname when he left Tennessee for the Missouri Territory.

I'm supposed to be descended from Kenneth MacAlpin (Cináed mac Ailpín) who was King of the Picts in the ninth century. Tracing anything this far back gets really iffy, though, and is almost impossible to do with any veracity.

That's true. As a general rule, I go with this thought: if you have ancestry from a particular country and you've had your DNA tested, just rock on and take pride in the Pictish, Celtic, Anglo- Saxon, Norse, Ligurian, Franconian, Slavic and any other ancestral element that is in there. If somebody says that they have identified a specific Norse, Celtic or Pictish individual one is said to be descended from, consider it a possibility ( but take it with a grain of salt until you've found a particular SNP that can go right back to the group in question).

I think what was special was that the Picts actually tattooed the woad, other Britfolk washed it off but the Picts thought that a terrible waste.

They were right. What resource is inexhaustible? Off that, I wonder, were the Picts freckled, red- headed folk who lobstered easily in the sun ( like me), or were they more of a darker, Atlantid sort ( like a couple of my cousins on the McDonald side)? The Bairds were the redheads in the family. My grandfather's maternal side was also the Scots- Irish side( straight back, I mean. The McDonalds of Scotland seemed to have married into Scots- Irish families almost as soon as they got here. The Cox family, the Lawson family, part of the Cecil family and the Baird family all contributed DNA.
