I've never been in the military.

Average salary in the UK: £27,600 per annum
    Starting salary, officer: £31,232 plus

    1) accommodation essentially free
    2) food heavily subsidised
    3) all medical care immediate and free, including non-essential things
    4) essentially guaranteed salary hikes to at least £40,000 within 3 years of commissioning (so, 50% higher than the national average at age 25 or so) with every possibility of serious advancement from that point to (ie, promotion to Major/Squadron Leader/Commander)
    5) your work clothes are also free

a military commander is a position of unrivalled ambition and responsibility. You might find yourself in charge of a dozen, three dozen, a hundred, a thousand men and women in life-and-death situations that change every day, and you are expected to want more of this pressure. A recent study suggested it is in fact the most stressful job out there (of those listed). I would suggest, serving myself, that [most] civilians are by contrast unmotivated, undisciplined, unambitious and in general, honestly, less skilled and competent.

A nation is defined by its military.

In my home country (Belarus) military service is compulsory. Many guys do military training in Universities getting lieutenant’s shoulder straps of reserve escaping military service. Lieutenant is lowest rank officer in my country. In reality a lieutenant of reserve from University maybe ignored by 18-19 year old conscripted soldiers. It may seem ridiculous. But that's how are things in my country. You don't get respect unless you have done real service in military. If you participated in real battles (wars or against terrorists) , then you are part of elite among military personnel.

In Uni we have OTC/UAS that technically constitute a part of the armed forces and the cadets are given the rank of 'acting 2LT' or 'acting Pt Off' but that's usually not taken seriously. The function of those organisations is to recruit people for the regular military, giving students a uniform and letting them get drunk in the mess is part of a charm offensive.
