Sorta sad my Malian went down, as I've always been fascinated by the history of Mali.

I'm also surprised by how much the Bantu/Cameroon/Congo went up!

I have noticed a lot of Afro-diasporans seeing an increase in both Cameroon/Congo and Benin/Togo, at the expense of Nigerian. This makes sense, as Nigerian ancestry overlaps with, and is essentially intermediate between, the two areas. With that said, I think AncestryDNA is now severely underestimating Nigerian ancestry in the New World.

It depends on where they are from. Not all countries/Islands had a huge influx of Nigerian slaves.

Anyways, here is my most recent Ancestry update:

Lmao no surprise that I told you thought you that you could easily pass as someone from the Dutch Antilles.

Which are you suggesting did not?

What is clear is the US did not have a lot of Beninese slaves apart from Louisiana, so the high Benin/Togo score in many African Americans seems too high.

It does seem to work better with some Latinos at least.

My 3% Southeastern Bantu, 2% Mali and <1% Senegal changed in the new update to 4% Cam/Con/South Bantu and 1% Benin/Togo. This new update aligns with the fact that most African slaves in Mexico came from Angola.

Doesn't necessarily mean exclusively Benin/Togo, could be referring to nearby nations as well.

    This is what AncestryDNA says:

    Primarily located in: Benin, Togo

Also found in: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Sierra Leone, Gabon

For years anthropologists and others looked at African ethnic groups as being mostly solitary and static. However, historians now know that huge empires and kingdoms, with administrations and armies, diplomatic corps and distant trading partners, have long been part of Africa’s fabric. This is especially true of West Africa, where migrations, conquests and intermarriage within allied kingdoms help explain why, for example, 43% of people from our Benin/Togo region have DNA that looks similar to the profile for our Ivory Coast/Ghana region, and 28% appear to have links to our profile for Nigeria.

New Mali doesn't have much to do with the late medieval empire.
