I always get the impression the younger generation is completely oblivious to the recent past.

Revisiting this thread, because I saw some comments about this in another context. It kind of made me think.
Vikings weren't retarded so they would obviously not want their women to be in their shield walls, which would be suicide. This is not modern warfare where strength doesn't matter, back then size and strength were essential qualities, due to the pushing they had to do and such. Maybe individual women were big and strong, but still the average woman would not be a warrior, though it is possible that a woman would defend their home - does that make her a "warrior"?

Maybe this and some other women were warriors, but judging by the burial this was a high class woman, so the equipment could be wealth related rather than war related, especially since certain objects seems to have had special significance beyond just war. I find it more interesting whether women were local leaders rather then whether they went Viking.

Take the Gokstad ship, that was a burial ship - for a warrior man, a large robust strong man with BATTLE SCARS. You could not avoid battle scars back then if you were truly a real Warrior. The bones would tell.
