Lightbulb China plans to grow flowers and silkworms on the dark side of the moon

Insects, plants, potato seeds and arabidopsis—a small flowering plant belonging to the mustard family - will be taken to the Moon on board the Chang'e-4 lander and rover in December

    excerpts:
China hopes to create a 'mini biosphere' on the dark side of the Moon, with flowers and silkworms sustaining each other as they grow on the lifeless lunar surface.

The unprecedented plan to create life in outer space is the most intriguing part of China's lunar probe mission later this year, and could be a major boost for dreams that humans will one day live on the Moon.

The insects, plants, potato seeds and arabidopsis—a small flowering plant belonging to the mustard family - will be taken to the Moon on board the Chang'e-4 lander and rover in December.
"Our experiment might help accumulate knowledge for building a lunar base and long-term residence on the Moon," Professor Liu Hanlong, chief director of the experiment and vice president of Chongqing University, told Xinhua news agency.
Although known figuratively as the "dark side" as it is unseen, the far side of the moon receives almost equal sunlight to the near side.
Potato and arabidopsis were chosen for the experiment because they grow quickly and can be easily observed by scientists.

"And potato could become a major source of food for future space travellers," said Professor Liu.

I found this article on the Drudge Report. When I read the article title I thought China would be growing tulips or carnations or something like that, but that's not what they will growing, it'll be a small flowering plant. Still, it's amazing that China will try to grow plants on the moon. And silkworms.

Do you think China's experiment will be successful?
Do you think they'll have a lunar base on the moon one day?
Would you want to go to the moon?
To visit? Or live there long-term?

Sounds like a pointless idea. The moon's gravity is too weak for a proper atmosphere, and the temperature of the moon varies every day, being too cold and too hot, as stated in the article:

The development of living organisms would also be at risk from the harsh climate on the Moon, where temperatures range from lower than -100 °C to higher than 100 °C.
The issue with the moon is its weak gravity, which means that the moon cannot uphold a proper atmosphere and with no magnetic shield around, no protection from solar winds (Mars has the same problem). This means that basically, all plants grown on the moon will have to be grown in tubes or something, so that they won't be harmed by all the solar radiation.

Living on the moon isn't healthy either by the way, because its gravity is so low, which means that the same health conditions developed by astronauts in space stations, will eventually develop among moon inhabitants. It's also questionable how well plants will grow on the moon, given its lower gravity.

So this pointless project, is just China showing off its technology without really achieving much.

Yes, China will use a bucket and small tube to grow the plants.

    From the article:
They will be placed in an 18cm tall bucket-like tin made from special aluminum alloy materials, together with water, a nutrient solution, and a small camera and data transmission system.

A small tube will direct natural sunlight into the tin to help the plants and potato seeds grow

    From the article:
Yeah but what's the point? We know this can be done. NASA has been growing food for their astronauts, in those space stations, for years. Only difference is that China is putting those tubes on the moon instead of in a space station. Pointless way to try to be original. I guess they just want to be the first to grow stuff on the moon. They'll probably abandon this project as soon as they have a few plants growing on the moon.

A more interesting question is if it'll be okayed by the "international community"? Some might not be that fond of the idea that terran life should be planted on our other planets and moons, not yet anyway. For example, although extremely unlikely, it's possible that there might be life on Mars, and growing plants there could disturb the indigenous life on Mars. So it's quite a radical idea to grow plants on the moon.
