Okay, I can understand that. I'm not pro-Catholic myself.

To me, it's unique architecture. I've read that the bottom part is made of stone, that's why it didn't burn to the ground.

I read some relics were saved, including what is claimed to be the actual crown of thorns that Jesus wore. I didn't know that was in there. Something like that should be at the Vatican. I think it's fake though.

That is one thing that is sad, many relics and manuscripts are believed to be lost. Although I am reading in the news that they found some things not destroyed.

Quite a few relics were saved, thankfully:

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/notre-d...tunic-windows/

I was brought up Catholic though not a fan of the church, but the history in it being lost is what’s sad.

I am not sure about France, but in Canada, the Catholic Church was very good at keeping records so people are able to learn about their family history through church records. They were quite meticulous.

Hopefully they have the data backed up on computers, so it can be restored. Won’t be the same as the original documents, but at least the information won’t be lost.

And yeah, a lot of cathedrals in Europe store Christian relics, like the crown of thorns Jesus wore, or things belonging to saints. Luckily some relics were actually in North America temporarily, some in Toronto, Quebec City, Winnipeg, and Baltimore.

The Associated Press has a list of what was saved and what was lost.

I frequently do feel deep sadness about that event, and I even wrote a post describing the historical and cultural background of those Gandharan Buddhist statues. It is a part of history very few people know about. Mahayana Buddhism was largely developed and refined by Greeks, Bactrians, Persians/Parthians, and Indians.

Finally, while I do not condone the burning of religious "sacred" sites, I do not appreciate the Abrahamic religions, and therefore, I do not care if mosques, synagogues, or Churches are burned. Not my problem. Just pray to your Sky Daddy to intervene and save them or whatever.

Interesting reading about the roof. Apparently there are no trees big enough, so it cannot be rebuilt as it was! Sad that such a magnificent building of such great age was destroyed. The roof was the original, apparently the trees used was bigger than the trees which exists today! Several of the other old churches have had their roofs replaced over the years, mostly due to fires, so it was quite a loss to lose an original roof construction of wood, from the Middle Ages.

Reading about the trees was my favorite part of the article. I would have liked to have seen that. They can't rebuild it as it was unless they import trees from somewhere else.

In case anyone is interested in reading the wikipedia page for the cathedral here it is:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre-Dame_de_Paris

I skimmed through it and found this: "It is believed that before the period of Christianity in France, a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter stood on the site of Notre-Dame".

Read on a news website that the renovation crew was made up of Moroccans and Algerians. There weren't supposed to be any workers in Notre Dame cathedral at the time of the fire.

It’s ridiculous that money was raised by regular people when the Pope could just melt down some of the gold in his hat to pay for the reconstruction.

This is a problem I have with the Catholic Church. I grew up in a poor fishing village in Nova Scotia and while I was living in Vancouver, the church had a fire which did a lot of damage and they hit me up on Facebook for a donation, even though I had been away from that place for many years and probably not even set foot in the church for twice as long. I literally only go there for weddings and funerals (too many funerals thanks to the rising poverty, crime rates, suicide rates, and opiate addiction) and when I am there, I don’t go up for communion. I have more money than most people where I grew up, so they were begging for cash from people a lot poorer than me... while the Vatican sits on a vast reservoir of wealth (often obtained via exploitation and outright theft). And in France, it’s going to be mostly the regular French taxpayer on the hook for this.

I mean, yeah, the destruction of Nortre-Dame is sad, but it’s just ridiculous.

Oh, and the church where I grew up? The fire was caused by a lightning strike... I would take that as a hint that even God doesn’t like what the church has been up to for the last 1000+ years.
