Default "Does Population Genetics Have a Racism Problem?" in New Scientist

Does population genetics have a racism problem, even today?

Unfortunately, most of the article lies behind a paywall, but there is a video featuring the author Angela Saini discussing the subject. Anyone here with a NewScientist subscription?

What's the racism problem? That European genetics is covered the most? Yeah the Europeans pay for it all so I think they have a right to spend most money on understanding European/West Eurasian origins.

That and leftists are preparing the biggest bombshell to hit them in a while. James Watson's (the Godfather of modern DNA) racist remark with the proof to back it up, via genetics, that blacks are , on average, less intelligent. The genetic proof is right around the corner.

Interesting video, I never really thought about how after WW2 the racialist science perspective began to die down.

I think where it can still be helpful is in discovering possible predispositions to certain diseases or health conditions that leads to future prevention. For example, some European descendants displaying higher rate of infertility, those of Native American descent with diabetes, African descent with sickle cell, and so forth.

    Yeah she seem unbiased.

I guess we have more problem with ignorance than population genetics being racist.

After a few minutes watching the video she sound like a common NPC unviversity leftist liberal subverter. A total useful idiot.

Sort of. The field of evolutionary psychology is where the old race science went to lick its wounds.

Efforts to group us by our genes are arbitrary and encourage the subtle return of race within mainstream science, argues Angela Saini
There's no "effort" to group populations based on genetics, and it's definitely not an arbitrary grouping either; it's mathematical, which is like the only objective science.

    By Angela Saini

THE end of the second world war was meant to have spelled the death of race science. Until the 1930s, it had been relatively acceptable for biologists and anthropologists to believe in innate differences between races. Many assumed that certain groups were superior to others. It was only after the war and the Holocaust that the world finally turned its back on this dangerous field of research.

People thought about race differently following the war. Anthropologists showed that most of what we think of as racial difference is in fact cultural and linguistic difference. Geneticists, starting with Richard Lewontin in 1972, have shown that more than 90 per cent of the genetic variation we see between humans lies within the racial categories we use. Being of the same race doesn’t necessarily make two people more genetically similar to each other than either of them would be to someone of another race. Race is today described as a social construct, its study confined to the social sciences so we can understand the effects of historical and modern-day discrimination. The handful of scientists who have continued to insist publicly on the existence of biological races have often been on the margins of respectability. There was William Shockley, the Nobel prize-winning physicist at Stanford University in California who wanted black women in the US to be voluntarily sterilised. Then there was Arthur Jensen, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who claimed …
The article still cites Lewontin as an authority for crying out loud. And that's exactly what race is: higher genetic similarity with members of your own ethnic group and racial group. Obviously this Angela hasn't heard of genome-wide SNP.

In any case, the issue here is that mainstream people don't like the idea of the possibility to categorize human groups. They're still in ideological John Lennon Imagine mode. The notion that there are no human races, that's just ideological pseudo-science. The fact that there are human races, doesn't mean everyone has to get all up in arms and start genociding each other, it just is what it is: human genetic differences as a result of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousand years of separation. If humanity had higher average IQ from the get-go, and our ancestors invented cool technology and colonized the planet already as soon as Anatomically Modern Humans emerged, then there would be no racial differences today between people living in Europe, China and Africa. But humanity lived like hunter-gatherers for a long time, with no vehicles and not even agriculture, so geographic barriers and isolation was the norm for a long time, and that's why we have racial differences today; there was little to no gene flow between people living in eastern Asia, Europe and Africa

In fact, they are not even the Europeans in strict sense, meaning European as in bearing the responsibility and understanding of European interests. Poland has always been an subordinate country, on one side sucking German dick, on the other side -- Russian one, some kind of "novice" europeans, who are full of inferiority complexes, hysteria and obsessity neuroses. This is also true for all Baltic countries

Fair point, it's a double edged sword, I just think if it can truly help with specific health conditions, we have to be extra careful about it.

Probably the NS article is a summary of her new book "Superior: The Return of Race Science", which is due to be published later this month. She is a former BBC science journalist of Indian descent. Angela Saini switched carriers from TV broadcasting to writing as she looked prettier when she was on TV.

Population genetics is a scientific discipline unlike psychology and anthropology which perpetuated institutional racism in the pre-war era. Arthur Jensen is one of these academic psychologists who had been publishing controversial IQ-related papers but he passed away in 2012 at age 89.

Roundly debunks racism's core lie - that inequality is to do with genetics, rather than political power' Reni Eddo-Lodge For millennia, dominant societies have had the habit of believing their own people to be the best, deep down: the more powerful they become, the more power begins to be framed as natural, as well as cultural. When you see how power has shaped the idea of race, then you can start to understand its meaning. In the twenty-first century, we like to believe that we have moved beyond scientific racism, that most people accept race as a social construct, not a biological one. But race science is experiencing a revival, fuelled by the misuse of science by certain political groups. Even well-intentioned scientists, through their use of racial categories in genetics and medicine, betray their suspicion that race has some basis in biology. In truth, it is no more real than it was hundreds of years ago, when our racial hierarchies were devised by those in power. In Superior, award-winning author Angela Saini explores the concept of race, from its origins to the present day. Engaging with geneticists, anthropologists, historians and social scientists from across the globe, Superior is a rigorous, much needed examination of the insidious and destructive nature of race science.

That is completely different from the race science I was thinking of.

I am just saying race science never went away. It’s still around. People keep trying to mainstream it.
