    Default Post your desktop :

    I made Debian Buster Linux look like MacOSX and that is my desktop.

    Debian

    [1] supports a lot of processor architectures

    [2] supports all the desktop environments

    [3] supports a lot of packages

    Debian “just works” and has a bigger selection of binary packages for non-x86 architectures than any other OS. Whether it’s PowerPC, amd64, or ARM, it’s the same Debian. That really fulfills the promise of Unix likes operating systems to abstract away the hardware.

    Why Debian ?

    I use a terminal emulator in full screen:

    In the screenshot above, the bottom split shows my most recent history using fzf (which uses ncurses to provide an incremental search interface for shells). The upper split shows the last shell command I ran:

    xs|pup .table_row|hm|z \[2|z \]1|swap|] 2|s %|1s \ $'\t'|tawk '{printf"%.1f %s\n",$1,$2}'|pc

    Most of the parts of the pipeline above consist of my own functions and aliases:

    xs()(oe 'tell app"google chrome"to tell active tab of window 1 to execute javascript"document.body.innerHTML"')
    hm()(pandoc -f html -t markdown_strict --no-wrap --atx-headers)
    z()(/usr/bin/cut -d"${1:0:1}" -f"${1:1}" "${@:2}")
    swap()(sed -n 'h;n;G;p')
    ]()(a 'ORS=NR%n?x:"\n"' "n=$1" "x=${2- }")
    s()(x=$(cat);for((i=1;i<=$#;i++));do a=${!i};let i++;x=${x//"$a"/${!i}};done;p "$x")
    1s()(while IFS= read -r l;do p "${l/"$1"/$2}";done)
    tawk()(a -F\\t -vOFS=\\t "[email protected]")
    alias pc=pbcopy

    I wrote this post in Emacs, which I also use in full screen:

    The background of my desktop is just black. I have hidden crap like the Dock, and I don't keep files on my desktop:

    If I was you I would have just installed ratpoison, stumpwm or CWM (from OpenBSD but available on Linux). I used to use ratpoison but more recently I used CWM :

    My main object of autism used to be OS X, so I'm so heavily invested in it that I'm not going to switch to GNU/Linux or BSD at this point.

    I need very little window management functionality, because I keep most windows either maximized or in full screen, so I rarely move or resize windows. I switch applications using keyboard shortcuts, so I don't need anything like the Dock, Mission Control, or the command-tab application switcher. I'm familiar with the CLI, so I virtually never use a graphical shell.

    The dude who made the video about cwm you posted should get the Useless Use of Cat Award for writing `cat /proc/meminfo | more`.

    Sorry, I just noticed you are running OSX. I looked at the lower left hand corner of your post , on this forum, and it shows the Mac symbol while mine shows the Linux symbol, obviously.

    Because it just looks like wallpaper rather than a desktop.

    Mine isn't too exciting, the default Windows 10 desktop.

    Not actually mine, I have more icons, but you get the idea.
