    Default Syrians

    From wikipedia:

Modern-day Syrians are an overall indigenous Levantine people. Genetically, they are most closely related to their immediate Levantine neighbours.Syrians also descend largely from a blend of the various groups indigenous to their country, in the case of Syria, most of whom were of the Christian faith and speakers of Aramaic; a language introduced by an earlier conquest. Syrians today, whether Muslim, Christian or other, are therefore a thoroughly Arab people, and it is these Syrian Arabs, together with some 400,000 UNRWA Palestinian Arabs (Muslim, Christian or other) which make up over 90% of the population.

One of the most phenotypically diverse groups in the Mid-East, certainly more so than Iraqis or Jordanians or even Lebanese.

Yes, like other mountain levantines (some Lebanese, Druze etc) they are lighter skinned, more variation with eye and hair colour, taller and more Armenoid.

Bashar Assad is actually nearly a good average allawi. You should look up for a family portrait of the Assads, that's quite typical allawis.

The problem is it's hard to find pictures of them on the web, but as far as I know from oriental ethnographers, they are quite similar to the Druze.

    EDIT:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Syrian_Alawites

All I can find, a few alawis (14), look up these people. It might help.

And, I found a few pictures of an alawi family (the Kachours), but these are just normal looking syrians as far as I can tell:

    Mother (Seham)

    Father (Sha'ban)

    Son in Law (Mohammad)

Well, not very good pictures and I couldn't put them here, but at least it's a real family.

Look like on general they are slightly more Arabid than Lebanese. In some photos they blend between Iraqi and Northern Gulf Arab and some photos they look Greek/Turkish.

Is there a reason why there is a gulf of difference - no pun intended - between the Levant and the Persian Gulf regions?

These people are anywhere from Iranid-Armenid-Arabid-East Med.

I've heard there are even Nordoid Syrians/Lebanese.
