Default Do you actually care about people you don't know?

Yes it is! If somebody told you "there was a massacre in a Japanese school where 200 people died"...Wouldn't you be sad? I would, and I think a lot of people would be too, although it doesn't involve their ethnic group, family or friends...
To be honest, no. I wouldn't care. Most people pretend to care about people thousands of miles away but they actually don't. Do you feel the same pang of hurt when a stranger dies than when someone you know does? Of course not. People will just pretend to care. They'll even contribute money to charity because they feel they must do something but it's out of their mind pretty quickly unlike when someone you actually care about passes away. That's most people and understandbly so. Society would crumble if we were always affected beyond what was superfically necessary when confronted with the misery of strangers.

So do you actually care about people you don't know outside of the superficial? Would you say I'm incorrect?

    Yes I do care.
It's not that I hate you, but let's say that if I had two bullets and Hitler was next to you, I would rather shoot you...twice

Allow me to direct the question back at you. Have you never felt compassion for people you don't know, thousands of miles away?

    No, BUT…

I find that I instinctively am compelled to help & sacrifice for other people that I do not know (strangers). For example, if somebody trips-over on the sidewalk, or falls-off their bike… then I automatically help them without thinking about it. It is compulsive. So I know that my sense of morality is innate and unconscious. I do not "care" about these people, at all, but my actions dictate my behavior regardless.

I also know that others, who would never help anybody, even if some girl was getting raped in an alley by a couple of bums, they would just walk-on-by and pretend nothing as happening. Again, this is genetic & biological. Some people instinctively have it (social mores). Others do not.

I care about things like that on a principal/intellectual level not on an emotional level.

I would care the more I got to know him…

But this thread is about people I do NOT know…

This reminds me of how people laugh at other people getting hurt on television shows. But, it is not funny when it happens to you, or somebody you know and care about, right? So it seems the more you know somebody, including yourself, the more you (can) care about anybody. Although, I think morality and sense-of-self are genetic & biological.

I do know of people who would walk by somebody getting raped/dying and not help or even feel the inclination to help them. I do (feel the inclination to help strangers), but, I know for a fact it is compulsive, biological, and genetic. Some people actually are 'selfish' or 'selfless' and the two opposing types often cannot understand the motivations of each-other. A 'selfish' person, for example, would think "why in the hell would you ever help that man??" A 'selfless' person, on the other hand, would think "why in the hell wold you ever NOT help that man??"

It is all about the context of the situation…
